WAIPAWA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Friday evening. Present —Mr H. M. Rathbone (Mayor) and Crs. Thackeray, Holt, Bibby, R. J. Pellow, E. E. Bott, L. Pratley, W. Yates and R. H. Wedde. CORRESPONDENCE. The Department of Health forwarded copy of circular issued by the Ministry of Health, England, in reference to the disposal of refuse. —Received. W. Kirk applied for a gas connection for Bryant’s new shop.— Granted. The hon. secretary of the Onga Onga Town Queen’s Committee forwarded £2 5s for rent of Concert Hall and asking for a rebate. —The Mayor said he sympathised with the promoters of the dance, but the Council had a schedule of charges and must adhere to them.—Cr. Thackeray said that to grant a rebate would establish a bad precedent—The request was refused. The secretary of the Napier Harbor Board advised that the agreement with the Council for the collection of harbor rates would cease, the local bodies collecting their own rates. — Received. The secretary of the Waipawa Hospital Board forwarded statement of estimated expenditure for the year ended March 31st, 1925, and advising that the Council’s quarterly instalment of £47 5s 9d was due. — Passed for payment. It was resolved to ask how the capital expenditure of £9OOO is made up. The hon. secretary of the Waipawa Football Club applied for permission to use Coronation Park.—The Mayor said he had given instructions that the goal posts be padded and the ground marked out. He pointed out that the club in question elected 59 vice-presidents and issued them tickets which entitled them to admission to the ground, and the Council derived no revenue therefrom. —Cr. Bibby thought everybody attending matches should pay. A contribution to a club should not entitle anyone to free admission to a football ground!.—lt was ljesollved to halve tile gate proceeds, provided that no free tickets are issued to anyone but officials.

R. W. Bond asked the Council to extend the storm water drain on the site of the old brewery.—Referred to the Roads Committee with power to act. The South Island .Maori Memorial Committee asked for a contribution to the fund.—Received. OVERSEER’S REPORT.

I beg to report the work done since the last meeting of the Council :

A water connection has been put in at the War Memorial; the corner from junction of High street with Waverley street has been rounded off, and channel concreted; a silt box has been made and pipes laid to eastern side of High street. Should this pipe not he able to take the water away, it will be necessary to lay another outlet in Waverley street. Abbotsford Road.—Water table cleaning and metal patching has been done in Abbotsford; the carting of timber, metal and bricks to the Abbotsford Home has cut up the road and it will require more metal before the carting to the Hdme is completed. Lindsay Reserve.—The blackberries cut on Lindsay Reserve last month ■ have been burnt, and 100 dead trees taken out and holes dug for replanting. Coal. —Three trucks of coal have been carted to the gasworks. . A concrete crossing has been put in at the entrance to the'Council’s yard. Metal patching has been done oil Tamumu road and Great North road; also in Melville street. Bryant’s new shop lias been connected with the gas main, and three concrete culverts made. Cutting grass on football ground and making lilies, with the usual routine, is the work done for the month. Roads Committee to deal with Abbotsford stock road. The remainder of the report was adopted. GENERAL. It was resolved to take legal proceedings against ratepayers who have not paid their rates. The Mayor and Cr. Bibby were appointed to sign the conveyance of the land purchased by the Progressive Association from Mr W. Flynn for the War Memorial site. The pay-sheet, as follows, was passed for payment: —General account, £282 15s 4d; gas account, £lsl 15s (id; waterworks account, £26 Is 2d; total, £460 12s. The Mayor reported all well at the gas and waterworks. The overseer was instructed to

carry out repairs to the borough road leading to Mr W. J. Wood’s residence, other local bodies interested to be asked to contribute their share.
