It is a remarkable fact that tl.c recent aeries of earthquakes lias hem most evident and most persistent in the Wairarapa district. An explanation of tliis was sought from a leading geologist. He stated that the centre of the earthquakes had not yet been fixed, as the records were not available, but it was thought that ts centre lav out to sea. Jf so, it might l e that the Wairarapa was the nearest land. There was a fault, or earthquake line, runivng in tlm directi ju of the Chatham Islands to N->.v Zetland, a I lei with the Huahino, T.irirui. and Jf the centre of the parallel wi Kaikoura orn end of that line, on which many earthquakes have been plotted. Wairarapa would he affected. The line was approximately a hundred miles in length and recent earthquakes in the vicinity of Gisborne indicated that the fault extended as far north as that' district. Earthquakes arc a more fundamental phenomena, than volcanic action, hut the latter also indicates lines of weakness. On the line referred to there are evidences of volcanic activity, but not in the Wairarapa. Volcanic signs are all on the west of the Buahine Range, except for some very ancient volcanic rocks (of the Tertiary period) on the East Coast.
