WAIPUKURAU.

(Own Correspondent).

On Saturday evening the members of the Drovers’ Association of this district held a euchre tournament in the Town Hall. There were between forty and fifty present, including the members of the various railway departments, who were by special invitation guests of the evening. The tournament was won by the railway men by 13 rubbers to 12. Mr H. N. Shepherd, who presided, in a pleasing speech welcomed the guests of the evening and thanked them for their attendance. He referred to the pleasant relationship that existed between the two organisations, and the willingness of the railwaymen at all times to give assistance when necessity arose in the loading of stock, etc. The speaker hoped the good fellowship would always continue, and that the present social gathering would be the forerunner of many more pleasant evenings together. Mr Green also spoke and endorsed all the former speaker said. Mr Taylor, stationmaster, on behalf of the railwaymen, thanked the drovers for the hospitality extended, and stated that it gave them great pleasure to attend. He was also pleased to know the staff and the drovers were working so harmoniously together, and he trusted the relationship as it stood would continue. The remainder of the evening was spent in a social reunion, with songs, toasts, etc.

At a meeting of the local branch of the Second Division League, Mr E. A. Goodger, president, was appointed as delegate to attend a conference at Napier on Friday, for the purpose of electing a representative to the Central Association at Wellington. The annual general meeting of the Bowling Club has been fixed for Friday evening next. Mr R. Mudgeway, of the Post Office staff, while getting a friendly pull on his motor bicycle (which had broken down) behind a motor car on Sunday evening on the road between Waipawa and Waipukurau, was knocked off his bicycle by a dog and received considerable injury to his hands and arms.

The following donations were received by the Red Cross League for the week:—A. and P. Association, £100; Mrs Sowry, bottle pennies (9s lid); Mrs Sargisson (Porangahau), 1 tin jam, 1 tin groats, 1 tin cocoa, 2 tins tobacco, 4 packets jelly; Porangahau Sewing Party, 4 pairs pyjamas, 3 day shirts, 2 pairs underpants, 4 undershirts (material supplied); Mrs D. L. Johnston, 2 pairs socks; Mrs A. Jones, 4 pairs socks; Mrs Scott, 2 pairs socks (wool supplied to all).

Ten boxes of flowers were sent to Wellington for the Flower Day held there.
