IS LONDON WICKED?

From time to time tlie cry is' raised that London is full of crime. There is, of course, some truth in this. But. moralists seem to forget that crime lurks in the underworld of every great centre where men congregate in millions, and that, compared with other capitals, London can show a veiy fair record.

Let us compare the records for on® year 1 of Loudon, New York, .and Chicago. Investigations were recently made by the chairman bf the Special Council Committee in Chicago, and they ;(howed that, as against 36 murder:: in London, New York had 131, and Chicago 262. In robberies, including afceults with the intention of robbing, Chicago also came off worst. There iwere 1022, to New York’s 962, and London’s 78. But the annual burglaries point a black finger to New York. These are the respective figure.* : —New York, \ 1,755; London, 1129; Chicago, 1041. So, judging from these statistics, London i* not iquite as black as it is painted.’
