OTANE

RED CROSS LEAGUE. (Own Correspondent). On Tuesday night the annual meeting of the Red Cross League took place in the Town Hall, Mr G. McKay in the chair. A long and interesting report of the year’s working was read by the secretary, and an audited balancesheet was read and adopted. In adopting the report members made very complimentary reference to the excellent work done by the hon. secretary, Miss Mundell, and the kindly and energetic spirit shown by the band of lady workers who met every Friday afternoon to help the boys at the front. The balance-sheet showed that £770 18s 6d had been received during the year, £226 in cash had been forwarded to the Centre, and over £6OO worth of made-up goods, and that there still remained a credit balance of £lB9 in the bank. Accounts to the value of £4O 5s were passed for payment. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mrs A. V. Collins; vice-presidents, Mrs Cleary and Mrs E. G. Willie ms; hon. secretary, Miss Mundell; hon. treasurer, Mr W. Malenoir; chairman, Mr G. McKay; hon. auditor, Mr R. H. White; trustees, the chairman and treasurer; buying committee, Mesdames Collins, Pay, Waters and Fletcher, and Misses Mundell and Steven. The secretary notified that Mrs Luke was expected to visit Otane shortly, when opportunity would be taken to have her address the League. Y.M.C.A. SOCIAL. On Tuesday night the social organised in aid of the Y.M.C.A. collection was held in the Town Hall and was generally voted the most sociable and successful function held this season. The building was thronged with visitors from all parts of the district, and everything went with a swing. The greatest praise is due to Miss A. Langridge, who was solely responsible for the management, having to prepare the floor, decorate the hall, organise the supper, and provide the musical programme, which consisted of songs by Mesdames Ness and Cleary, Miss Stack, and Messrs Waters and Page, Mr J. Sinclair contributing a Highland fling. A raffle for a handsome case of serviette rings was drawn, the winner being Mrs J. C. Nelson. It was handed back by the winner and sold by auction several times, the nett result being £9 7s. The buyers were Mrs McAulay (twice), Miss Howard, Mr G. Collins (twice), Mr G. McKay and Mr W. Davidson. Mr Flejvellyn King, the provincial secretary of the Y.M.C.A., was present and gave an interesting address dealing with the Y.M.C.A. work at the front. He heartily congratulated the local people on the excellent result of their efforts to forward the good cause. Miss Stack provided the dance music in her usual efficient manner, and Mr G. McKay contributed to the success of the evening as hon. auctioneer.

Following is a list of the collections (the names of the individual donors will be published by the treasurer in a. later issue): —Mrs A. V. Collins and Miss Langridge, £153 17s 3d; Mrs A. G. Clark, £22 10s; Mrs Munro and Mrs Vaughan, £2O; Mrs E. G. Williams, £3B 11s Id; Miss Mundell and Miss Steven, £l9 10s 2d; collection at Mrs De Castro’s lecture and sale of badges, £9 6s; social evening, £l9 18s lOd; total, £283 18s 4d. In connection with the above the £2O collected by Mrs Vaughan and Mrs Munro was the result of the sale of sweets and mystery bags manufactured by these ladies from articles and donations contributed by lady friends.
