“THE DANDY GENERAL.”

NEW ATTACK DIRECTED BY SIR H. PLUMER. General Sir Herbert PI inner, K.C.8., who led tho Second Army in tho Mossines battle, at the outbreak of tho war was the General Officer Commanding Northern Command, at York, but at the beginning of 1915 he was gazetted an army corps commander, and was in 1916 placed in command of the Second Army, in Flanders. Ho has always been noted for his excessive politeness to his soldiers, and is said always to back liis orders with a “please,” and supplement them with a “thank you.” During tho advance on Mafeking a shell fell close to his horse, causing the animal to face a cloud of dust. “The Dandy General” calmly flicked his •sleeve, and said to his aide-de-camp, “Bo so kind as to go to the officer in charge and ask him to be good enough to silence that gun.” Sir Herbert is 60 years of age.
