U BOAT CAMPAIGN.

ACTIVITY OF AMERICAN DESTROYERS. FRENCH TANKER’S FIGHT. Australian & N.Z. Cable Association. (Received This Day 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 1. Reports received here state that American destroyers in British waters engaged two submarines six miles distant, forcing them to submerge and beat a retreat. One U boat had just sunk a steamer and the second was attacking a merchantman when the destroyers fired. One of the submarines was of the super type. A French tatiker beat off two U boats after a desperate fight.
