LARGEST TREES IX AMERICA A recent effort by the American Genetic Association to locate end identify the largest American trees resulted in tlio discovery of a sycamore or button* wood (Platanus occidentals) which is more than 42 feet in circumference and 150 feet high. Other largo trees ••<*- ported were a valley oak (Quercus Lo liatu 37 feet in circumference, a chestnut (Cnstanen dentata) 35 ft. in cii - c umforence, a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera 34 ft., a. sassafras (Sassafras variifolium) nearly 16 feet, a white birch 12 feet, a pecan (Carya Illinoeu sis) 19 feet, and a catalpa (Ohtalpa specioso) 16 feet in circumference. The largest elm reported was the “great elm) at Wethersfield, Connecticut, which : -s about 28 feet in circumferen.e.
