A public send-off will be accorded the recruits of the Eighteenth Reinforcements on Monday morning, and the school children, band, and National Reserve will parade at the post-office at 10 o’clock. The shops will close for half an hour. It is hoped that the public will turn out in large numbers. Mr Witty asked, in the House, if it was a fact that men who were discharged as “undesirable” could purchase badges which would give thorn the possibility of wearing a badge that was unjustified. The Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey intimated that full inquiries would be made into the allegation. The treasurer of the N.Z. Centre of the French Red Cross has cabled a further sum of £IO,OOO to headquarters in Paris, making to date a total of £14,340 remitted through the Consul for France in Auckland. There will probably be a further £I6OO to remit when all accounts are squared, so that New Zealand’s gift will amount to £16,000 cash and over £IOOO in goods. The Hon. G. W. Russell addressed meetings in Christchurch and Dunedin in connection with the organisation of women for undertaking clerical services to fill fhe places of men who have gone or are going to the front. In Wellington 850 women have registered for this service. The Minister will shortly visit Auckland for the purpose of advising the Women’s Reserve there of the methods being adopted in other centres under the scheme being carried out under his direction.

In the poultry section at the Palmerston North Winter Show Mr J. Aubrey, of Waipawa, secured first prize for brown Leghorn cockerel, special for best brown cock, and also the North Island Leghorn Club’s special for best brown Leghorn in the show. Mr W. T. Hicks, of Otane, secured three firsts, a second, and a third in the open classes for black Orpingtons, also a first and second in t he utility classes for the same breed. He gained the specials for best male bird both in the open and utility classes.

Mr F. Peters, the well-known Waipawa orchardist, competed with marked success at the Palmerston North Winter Show. Besides being second in the championship he scored first for London Pippin, any other variety Pippin, Boston Russet, Wolseley, Northern Spy, Ohiuemuri, Ballarat Seedling, Rome Beauty, second for London Pippin, any other variety Boston Rpsset, Wolseley, Rome Beauty, any other variety dessert apples, any other variety cooking apples, and third for Stone Pippin, also firsts for half cases of Northern Spy, London Pippin, thirds for half cases Reinette du Canada, and any other variety cooking apples, as well as first for dessert pears, second for cooking pears, and second for walnuts.
