PROGRESS OF THE WAR

SUMMARISED CABLES. GREECE AND THE ENTENTE. DEMANDS CONCEDED. ARAB RISING AGAINST THE GERMANS. BIG EVENTS PENDING. The Allies are issuing a statement couched in the strongest terras, explaining the reasons for the blockade, and will probably be demanding an immediate general demobilisation of Greece’s forces. King Constantine and his family have left Athens, and are staying at Dekalia Castle. Semi-official: The Allies’ Note to the Greek Government demanded a general demobilisation and the immediate dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies and a general election, together with the replacement of certain high authorities. It is understood that the latter include police agents under German influence. Reuter reports that a despatch from Athens states that Greece has accepted all the Entente Powers’ demands. The “Echo de Paris” states that General Lctchitsky’s vigorous advance continues. His Cossacks have reached Radantz, and the outlook for General P/lanzer’s right wing is precarious. Forty thousand of the Czemovitz population have returned to the town. The Russians are distributing plenty of provisions. The town is little damaged. An Italian communique says:—The enemy attacked our positions at Ledro Valley on the southern slopes of Mount Sperone. There was lively fighting, but the enemy was completely repulsed. Yesterday, at Lake Carda and Avico, there were artillery skirmishes, in the course of which wc took rifles and ammunition and a machine-gun. On the Asiago plateau, with the exception of small attacks towards Monte Magnobischi and Mandrielle, the enemy was strictly on the defensive, strongly resisting the Italian advance. The newspapers in London are giving prominence to the Government of ' India’s declaration, made in Novein- ; her, 1914, regarding the Moslem Holy Places, and to Aga Khan’s emphatic pronouncement, also in November, 1914, concerning Turkey’s betrayal of her trusteeship of Islam. Arabia has pronounced its independence under the Grand Sheref, whose forces have captured Mecca and Jeddah. The Turkish garrison at Taif surrendered. The rising, although only the last of a series of rebellions against Turkish rule, has been greatly stimulated by hitter resentment against German dominion in Turkey. The Grand Sheref is supported by the tribes of West-central Arabia. His operations began on the 9th inst. The Sheref’s forces captured Jeddah and Mecca. The Taif garrisons, with the exception of two small forts at Taif, surrendered. Forty-five officers and 1400 men and six guns were captured at Jeddah. The Sheref is closely besieging Medina, and holds the communications to Iledjaz. The crisis of the 1010 campaign is approaching. The pressure is increasing on every front. The aerial activity and reconnaisances are unparalleled. The advance of the Bulgarians in Greece is a precaution showing that Germany suspects that the Allies’ insistence t>n Greek demobilisation is the forerunner of an offensive in the Balkans. The cannonading on the Balkan front continues, but the Allies’ activity everywhere bewilders tlie enemy. The general military situation is such that great decisions may he expected shortly. Deputy Cochin writes to “L’Humanite” that the hour of the British army’s intervention has struck. An immense and well-equipped army with most powerful artillery and an enormous quantity of munitions will now give efficacious aid to France. The “Daily Chronicle’s” Amsterdam correspondent reports that the Kaiser is at Brussels awaiting a big military event.
