GRAYS CRISIS.
IN THE BRITISH CABINET. COMPULSION THE BONE OF CONTENTION. LONDON, April 19. The newspapers foreshadow a Unionist Cabinet, including Mr Lloyd George, with a general election in May. The u Daily Chronicle” says that unless the Cabinet decides for compulsion Mr Lloyd George, Mr Bonar Law and the Unionist members will resign. The situation is somewhat easier owing to the efforts of the Cabinet Committee, consisting of Mr Asquith, Lord Kitchener, Mr Bonar Law, Mr Lloyd George and Mr Henderson, to try and find a solution. IN THE BALANCE. The “Times,” in a leader, says:— “The fortunes of tlie struggle for the fate of England and the Empire hang on Mr Asquith’s announcement today. The Empire has reached the point when he must state whether lie intends to straighten the confusion of the present recruiting method and maintain the forces indispensable for victory. The prodigious efforts to make the plain requirements of the military situation square with the exigencies of party politicians have, we believe, failed. Nothing short of a single comprehensive measure of universal service will satisfy the situation. Labor is apparently divided regarding compulsion.”
