“Sweet Lavender.”

Tha Waipawa Dramatio Club were unfortunate in the matter of weather, last uight, when “ Sweet Lavender ” was staged before an appreoiative audience. The sterling play went with a awiog from the rise of the curtain and the per formers, under the stimulus of frequent eooouragemeut, excelled themselves and gave most praiseworthy delineations of their respective oharesters. Io faot, tbe toting all round reached a high level of excellenot that is seldom attained by amateurs and than only by long practice and olose study. The drama was well mounted and dressed and nothing was lacking in this respeot. The ohtmber designed and painted by Mr Tom Niohol son was appropriate and artistio The drama is a strong though difficult one for emataure but tbe emotional eoenet were powerfully portrayed without over stepping " the modesty of nature ” while the more delicate passages were handled with a lightness of touch that was admir able. Taken at a whole the verdiot was that “Sweet Lavender" was the most artistic and well balauoed amateur per formance ever witnessed in Waipawa. As the down at heels, dissipated but good hearted barrister Dick Pheuyl, Mr W. J. Bell was seen to great advantage His acting was marked by dramatio light and shade that was admirable and be oarrisd his heavy load without appareut effort. Dr J. Lewis Retd, who is deservedly a favourita with Waipawa audiences, portrayed Horace Bream with finish. Hiß acting was natnral and not over accentuated, for ha soored the points in the dialogue without straining for eff-iot. Dr Reid is an adept at “ make up ” and h-e Bream was equal to aDy of his many admirable imper sanations of former days. Mr D. F O’Reilly was in bis eloment as the good natured Dr Delaney, whose oheery op timism does so much to help the play merrily along. Mr O’Reilly looked snd aoted the part as to the manner born and fully deserved the hearty recognition he received from the audi enoe. Mr W. Vickers also appeared to distioot advantage as Geoffrey Wedderburn and earned applause foi a o’over and consistent impersonation. Mr T. W. Wills showed distinct improvement on his first appearanoe as Clement Hale, for he aoted naturally and at times forcibly. He infused a good deal of fervour into the love soenes with Lavender that helped towards the snocess of tbe produo tion. Mr C. M. Whittington as Bulger fulfilladjthe requirements of the ohtraoler and Mr O. V. Whittington mada . g -od impression as Maw. Miss Olive Mitohell has never appeared to such advantage as in Lavender. She looked and dressed the oharaoter to perfection. Her acting reaobed a high level of exoslltnoe while in the moving passages her impersonation was marked by a subdued intensity that held the audience. Miss Annie Bradbury lent valuable aid as Ruth Rolt. She was natural and uuaffeoted and especially strong io tho emotional soenes, whioh were depicted with fidelity to nature. Taken altogether it was a strongly drawn impersonation of a difficult oharaetar. Mrs Hogg provided the oomedy element as Mrs Gilfillian and she kept the amnee ment going with a breszineee that was infections, provoking roars of laughter by her appropriate by-play. Mise Eileen Whittington was a vivaoious Minnie. She dtserves credit for the manner iu which she sustained a long aDd exaoting oharaoter. The Waipawa Orchestra contributed the incidental mueio in good style.

Richmond Park Water Supply —A length of about 15 chains of water mtio in Richmond Perk is not at all satisfactory, the water drawn from it being far too rutty for domestic purposes. Tbe pipes iu this portion were taken np from different parte of the old town supply. To melt tbe lead out of the joints the pipes were put on a fire aod I think this must have burnt off the iuaide coating, henoo the rust. As a remedy 1 hen prepared an approximate e.timate of 15J chains of lj inch galvanised pipe to bs laid olose to tbe 4 iooh main. Tha galvanised pipe would thee bs used for domestic purpose!, aud the 4 inch mtio would be used in oats of fire and for flushing sewers. BitiaK‘,e £2B 6e.
