MAKARETU.

(Own Correspondent.) On Friday evening last a very pleasant function took place in the form of oelebrating the opening of the new and up-to-date post-office and store reoently built by Mr Derry in Ashley Clinton. Dancing commenced at 8 o’clock, when about thirty couples occupied the floor, and there were about 80 people present. A good supper was partaken of at 10.30, and also handed round at different intervals. Dancing was kept up till daybreak. Songs were rendered by several visitors, Mr Ewen Callin sang two songs in a style that delighted everyone. Mrs Clegg also saDg in her usual pleasing manner, and other songs were rendered by Messrs 0. Miles and Hamilton. Miss O’Reilly presided at the piano, and Mr F. Durham acted as M.C. Mr D. Howse, our worthy councillor, made reference to Mr Derry’s long residence in Ashley Clinton, and the hard struggle he had experienced during that time. Mr Derry had now seen his way to launch out in a manner that was a oredit to himself and the district, and the speaker felt sure that everyone present would endorse his remarks and wish both Mr and Mrs Derry every success in the future. Hearty applause followed, and all sang 11 For he's a jolly good fellow.” Visitors gathered from Makaretu, Blackburn, and Ashley Clinton, and departed highly satisfied with the evening’s entertainment. Mr H. Evans, roadman in the service of the Waipawa County Council, killed a lamb on Christmas Eve which turned the scales at 691 b. The lamb was born in August, 1911.
