Hawke’s Bay Education Board.

The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs C. M. Whittington (chairman), W. Morgan, Q. F. Roach, M. McLeod, and the Rev. A. Grant Leave of absence was granted to Messrs J. Q. Sheath, W. G. Hunter, and G. Darton. chairman’s statement. The Chairman’s monthly statement was as follows : Appointments made—MrC. Rendle, pupil teacher, Woodville; Miss L. Thompson, temporary assistant, Mohaka. Resignations received. —Miss Lee, assistant, Puha; Mr Blackford, sole teacher, Motu. Epidemics.—The Pakipaki school was closed for three weeks at the end of last month on aocount of a prevalence of scarlet fever. Hastings school is at present closed at the request of the Health Department to permit of the rooms being thoroughly fumigated. School committee elections.—lt appears that owing to the inclemency of the weather on the night appointed for the annual meeting of the householders certain districts failed to elect committees. I would suggest that Monday, May 26th, be fixed as the date for the second election. Wards.—l would recommend that the boundaries of the wards bo unchanged for anothor year. Tenders.—The tender of Messrs Hoar and Baillie for the erection of the Technical School at Woodville for £1066 has been accepted. Inspector Smith. Mr Inspector Smith has been absent from duty for the past fortnight owing to injuries received by a fall from his horse. He expects to recommence work of inspection on Monday, May Ist, prox. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended as follows:—(1) 'lhat the secretary obtain information as to the number of free school books required ; (2) that the question of procuring a site in Napier South be held over for further inquiry ; (3) that the question of timber yards and a site for offices be deferred, the Chairman explaining that he had reason to hope that the Lands Department would make the board a present of a suitable and central site; (4) that fresh applications be called for a new school at Makaretu South; (5) that the erection of a new school at Ngatapa be gone with ; (6) that Tricklebank and Son’s application for payment of the erection of a new chimney at Buahine be refused; (7) that accounts amounting to £5301 12s 2d be passed for payment.—Adopted. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The Appointments Committee recommended as follows : —(1) That the Waipukurau headmaster having requested to be retired on superannua tion, the householders be asked to reconsider their decision not to elect a committee this year; (2) that the headmasters of the Catholic schools send in registers at intervals ; (3) that the inspector’s reports on a number of schools be adopted.—Approved. WOODLANDB SCHOOL. A deputation consisting of Messrs R. B. Ross, M.P, and E. T. Rendle waited on the board in support of a petition with regard to the Woodlands School. The Chairman thanked the deputation for the information they had given, and said their request would receive ev6ry consideration. At a later stage of the meeting the matter was referred to the Chairman for a report. SCHOOL CORRESPONDENCE. Letters from school committees were dealt with as follows : Woodville—That the committee’s report stating that they could not recommend a new school at Ngawapurua be approved. That the questions of conveying children from Woodlands to Woodville and a new school at the former place be referred to the Chairman for a report. Copy of the letter sent to the Department with regard to non payment of subsidy for gymnasium be held over for consideration. Takapau.—Application for additional dual desks refused. Patutahi.—Committee to be informed that they cannot pay a salary to their secretary out of the board’s funds. GENERAL. Communications were received from the Department declining grants for a new school at Maharakeke, a residence at Wanstead, and repairs to residences ; approving conveyance of children from Ashcottand Burnside to Takapau; approving grants for certain

washouses and bathrooms; granting £360 (or new school at Ngatapa ; and granting £989 for technical school at Woodville.—lt was deoided to agaiu urge on the Department the absolute necessity for a residence at Wanstead and to ask on what grounds the grant was refused. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to make a £ for £ grant up to £l7 to the Otane school committee for the purpose of erecting a windmill and storage tank, as recommended by the Board’s overseer. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to grant the Waipukurau scholarship holders who are attending the Waipawa District High School, an annual allowance of £lO. foreman’s report. The following recommendations of the foreman were adopted :—That a stove be installed and that repairs to the spouting at the Waipukurau school be referred to the committee ; that a hedge be planted at Pakowhai to take the place of a dividing fence; that the Department be asked for grants for additions to the Mangapapa, Mangateretere, Waipukurau, and Mahora schools.
