Charitable Aid.

[Per Press Association.] Christchurch, This day. At the annual meeting of the Charitable Aid Buard, yesterday, the ohairman, Mr Mauhire, said there was too much charity in New Zealand and no encouragement to thrift and the old age pensions were looked forward to by many. The Charitable Aid Boards tried its best to make men break stones and earn their rations. In mauy cases men sent their children to do work and too frequently young people sent their pareuts to the Charitable Aid Boards with requests that the old people be put into homes. Their children were quite willing to give the board the old age pension, if any were drawn, but it was a disgrace. The Board should not have to make these old people go to hones if they did not want to. He referred to the frequency of wife desertion. Hardly a meeting of the board was held at which these oases did not crop up. It was a mistake to put these men in gaol. They should be made to work. He also made reference to tbe alarmiDg inorease of illegitimate children. Any woman, he said, can place an illegitimate ohild in a home, and the foster parents, if not paid, can call on the Charitable Aid Board to contribute. It was altogether unsatisfactory.

Nelson, This day The Nelson Charitable Aid Board, last night, rescinded a resolution admitting ddirium tremens patients to the hospital and gave a general order that no such patients be admitted in future, and if it developed iu a patient when in the hospital he be promptly removed. It was resolved to write to the Government, refusing to treat delirium tremens patieuts aud recommending the erection of a padded cell at all police stations. It was the polices’ fault if such cases arose, as it was their duty to see that publicans did not sell too much liquor. It was resolved to approach the Government for the establishment of an additional Convalescents’ Home, whither patients leaving the annexe partially cured may be sent.
