The senior match for the Hunter Shield, between the Waipawa and Waipukurau Clubs, was played upon the Empire paddock on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the home players by 6 points (two tries gained by J. Moroney) to 5 (a try gained by Bailey and converted by Sharpiu). Waipawa took the field with 13 men but two others put in an appearance during the second spell. Waipawa kicked off but the leather was quickly returned and the Blues began an attack and succeeded in eluding their opponents and swept dowu on the lied line. A score seemed certain but Brewer saved in the nick of time. Loose scrums and forward rushes were the order for some time until Malloy intercepted a pass and got to the Waipukurau twenty-five, where he was grassed and a scrum was formed. The Bed forwards worked the oval through but

kicked too hard and Sharpin got pos session. He attempted to kick down the field but J. Moroney spoiled his attempt, and getting hold of the ball fell over. Mackay failed to negotiate the ball over the bar. Waipawa 3 points, Waipukurau nil. From the kick out the Blues carried the ball to Waipawa’s twenty-five, when it was kicked into touch by Limbrick. Lino play was the order for some time and then the home team was forced. Line play followed until Livingston passed to Bailey, who got as far as the Waipawa line before he was grassed and Collett came to the rescue. The Blues continued pressing for some time and kept up a brisk attack until Eccleton relieved the pressure by kicking into touch. Bailey and Livingstone were prominent in a loose rush and Ferguson initiated a passing rush, in which Symes and Harvey did good work and the defenders were forced. Soon after the kick out Moroney got away and aided by Mackay and Brewer, they carried the scene of operations to the Blues’ territory, where several loose scrums took place and the visitors were forced. From a rush following the kick out Mackay marked the ball

and kicked into touch on the Blue side of the half way flag. From the line out Waipukurau instituted a ru?h between the backs but Collett stopped it within his own territory and kicked the oval out near half way. Ferguson secured the ball from the throw out and gave his backs an opportunity but the ground gained was lost by a pass forward. Symes put in a fine run and kicked to the Waipawa line but Pine saved. Bailey then headed a forward rush and the Beds had to act on the defensive for some time. Ferguson marked, Symes had a try at goal but failed. A series of scrums followed in front of the Waipawa goal, where Brewer did strong defensive

work. Pine eventually relieved the

pressure by kicking into touch. Green passed out to Collett, who got away and ran well within the Blues’ quarters, where he kicked instead of passing to Eccleton, and Bassett marked. Half-time was called soon after. The backs of either side exchanged kicks when the ball was put in motion, until a scrum was formed in Waipawa’s quarters. Ferguson got the oval and sent it along to Harvey, who made some headway until he was pushed into touch. Eccleton marked and line play was the order for some time. Brewer

streaked down the field but could not elude the full back, a scrum was formed near the Blue line, and eventually they were forced. Livingstone then made a determined effort to score but Lyons stopped his progress and the oval went into touch. Shrimpton was prominent soon after in a forward rush, which was not checked until Waipukurau’s territory had been invaded and J. Moroney gaining possession, ho and Jas. Moroney fell over the line near the corner. Mackay failed with the kick. Waipawa 6 points, Waipukurau nil. The Blues then attacked but Lyons marked and brought relief. Sharpin, however, sent the leather to Symes, and Harvey and Ferguson, handling the ball well, swept on, but Peni was not to be denied, aud what looked like a certain score was saved. Symes marked and a scrum took place in

mid-field until a free kick was awarded the visitors. Fast following up spoiled the return and the Beds were forced. Shrimpton and Mackay fol-

lowed the kick out and a scrum was formed half way, where a free kiok was awarded Waipukurau. This enabled them to renew the attack and they rushed onto the Beds’ line, where Green relieved and gave Eccleton an opportunity. He was run into touch near half way. The Blues came on again and got within Waipawa’s twenty-five, where Bailey and J. Moroney each attempted to kiok the ball. Moroney’s legs crossed and he fell, snapping the bone above the ankle. Long serums on Waipawa’s line followed until Mackay relieved by breaking through. A free kick was awarded the attackers and Symes had a try at goal but was unsuccessful. Waipawa’s twenty-five was the scene of play for some time until Limbrick marked and his kick was followed by Malloy, who carried the leather to Waipukurau’s quarters, where loose scrumß resulted. A free kick enabled them to act on the offensive, but Collett - and Williams shifted the base of operations until Ferguson and Sharpin got away. Bailey and the forwards continued and Peni came to the rosuo. Ferguson broken through but his career was cut short by Lyons, who got to half way, where a scrum took place. Ferguson passed out to Harvey and he streaked for the line and was grassed by Malloy. That player and Mackay headed a rush which carried the ball well down the field. Tht oval was returned and from a forward rush Bailey got over and scored between the posts. Sharpin converted. Waipawa 6 points, Waipukurau 5. Give and take play followed until call of time, when the play was in Waipawa territory. Mr Williams, of Napier, was referee and Messrs Ellison end Abrahams line umpires. We' are of opinion that the line umpires should be chosen by the Beferees’ Association or the union and not by the clubs interested. Onga Onga Juniors v. Hula.
