Sir, —I have the honour to submit you the following report, viz. :—Mangatora Riding—McGaffin has completed his metalling contract on MangahePukokomoka road. Also the delivery of 1100%yards metal on the Tuturewa road, viz., the approaches to the Tuturewa bridge, and this oompletes the metalling of the whole of this road, less about 40 chains of the fiat between Weber road and top of outting going down to Tuturewa bridge. McGaffin and Smith have also completed their metalling contracts and the main Weber road. And an additional 400 yards between the Manawatu and Mangatera rivers and I have given the roadman instructions to raise the centre of road cuttings from Mangatera bridge to top of outting at McDermott’s, with metal from the side batter of cuttings. Hull has also completed his metalling contract on Pukokomuka road. The contractors on the formation works on Mangapuaka road are making very satisfactory progress. Smith’s|formation and metalling contract on Kaitoki-Otope road, I am informed, is completed but I have not yet passed it. The repairs to Manawatu bridge are completed as authorised. Dannevirke Riding.—The whole of the metalling contracts in this riding are completed with the exception of Tamaki East road, whioh is under progress, and will be finished in a few days. The Phoenix mill bridge which was burnt down in the early part of the month is not yet completed, owing to the sawmiller’s delay in supplying the timberiat the time they promised. There is only a portion of the deck planking wanted, and when that is obtained, traffic will be opened. Norsewood Riding.—Leopold and Schmidt have made good progress with their metalling contract on the main road and Norsewood-Makotuku road, and will complete in a few days. The contractors for the formation of Railway road, Matamau, are not making satisfactory progress, as they seem to work by fits and starts. I am sending them notioe to complete without further delay. I am informed that Morgan and Co. are making excellent progress with their formation on South Makaretu road. I will visit them in a few days. Ormondville Riding.—Ho wse and Smith are making excellent progress with their metalling works on Waikopiro main road, as they are nearly through with their contract. I have arranged for repairs to Chadwick’s cutting which was cut up by metaj drays. This work was authorised by the chairman. Cullinane will complete his con-> tract on Aheweka road, Waikopiro, in a few days. Takapau Riding.—Taylor has completed his metalling contract in South Makaretu, and O’Grady will, I am informed, oomplete his metalling on the Sherwood road to-day, but I had occasion to send him a prompt notice to break the large stones before the other metal became consolidated. This is the greatest trouble which I have got, as I cannot get a number of contractors :to comply. They invariably make the excuse that they cannot obtain men at certain times of the year. This is the time, but now there are plenty of men looking for work. Sinclair and McKay have made a start jvith their metalling contract on AshcottSherwood road and are progressing satisfactorily. The fencing of the road deviation on the Cross road through Ashcott will be put in hand forthwith. Staunton will complete his metalling contract on Price’s and Makaretu school road in a few days. Ruataniwha Riding.—Butler will, I

expect, complete the water race from the Tuki Tuki to Onga Onga creek in about a fortnight. Delays have occurred in connection with getting the appliances for the flood gate, but through no fault of his, as he has used every endeavour to complete the work, and I am as anxious as he is to see it completed before the rainy season sets in. The grader teams have been engaged during the past month metalling the Onga Onga-Wakarara road, and after another ten days I intend, with your permission, to start the grader to work on the Weber end of the county, on Mangapuaka road, thence working back through Dannevirke, Norsewood, and Ormondville. They have done good work since they started metalling, having metalled about ten miles of road and made a good job of it, but the grader on the way through will repair Ashcott-Fairfield road.

Hampden Riding.—Taylor has cornelected bis metalling contract on the Wakarara main road, and Moulder has completed the formation of Fletcher’s fern fiat and will start metalling it tomorrow. I intend being in that district within the next few days to lay off the road deviation through Mr Berkahn’s to Hickey’s, and when there will report on all other necessary works and attend to any urgent ones. I think a start should be made to repair the Hampden-Wai-pawa road with metal patching, and would recommend 700 cubio yards be put on the worst portions between the upper end of Hampden township and the Manganoaka bridge, but I do not expeot this amount will be sufficient for the whole season, as the traffic on that road is of a heavy nature. Waiapnkixrau Riding.—O’Grady has

completed his metalling Co south end of Hatuma road and I have had an extra raking in the metal aW length where most r«qj work is not yet completed Waipawa Riding.— I w 700 cubic yards of rivers with the worst portions 0 f tween the Manganoaka ri. pawa, although as io th e Hampden end, it will not | oarry the traffic through \\ will advise you of future as they oocur.
