NAPIER NEWS.
[Own Correspondent.] Napier, Yesterday. There was great rejoicing in the local volunteer camp, on Saturday night, when it was known that the Coleman Shield, as well as the belt, had come to Napier. There is great rivalry between the Guards and Rifles over the event, and when the teams went up to Waipawa the supporters of both were very confident of victory. The Guards certainly owe their success to the energy of Captain Kettle, who has kept his men well up to practice. Private Mole, the winner of the belt, was formerly a member of the Guards, so that company have doubly good reason to feel satisfied with the result of the day’s shooting. Dr Sturt, of Sydney, who was a passenger by the s.s. Zealandia, died suddenly aboard that vessel while she was in port on Friday. At the inquest it was shown that deceased suffered from heart disease, and a verdict was returned that death was due to that cause. The deceased gentleman was interred here to-day. The Rev C. E. Beecroft officiated. A very satisfactory response has been made to the Hospital Trustees’ invitation for assistance in urging on the Government the necessity of at onoe erecting a cancer hospital in a central position.
The holiday passed off without accident so far as Napier was concerned. The weather was simply perfect, and picnics were the general order of the day, the town presenting a very deserted appearance.
Yesterday a southerly gale of exceptional violence swept over the district. Unfortunately for the farmer the rain which accompanied it was not sufficient weight to affect the crops to any extent, and to-day the ground was almost as parched as before.
