The Coleman Shield.

Splendid weather favored th» volunteers for their annual “ shoot ” for the shield presented by Mr J. H Coleman, which took place on the local corps’ range, on the King’s Birthday. Additional interest was added to the competition this year owing to the fact that Mr Coleman had still further shown his interest in volunteering by presenting a champion "belt, to be held from year to year, by the highest individual scorer. Twelve teams entered this year as against nine last year, and in order to meet the increased entries the executive had had the trench length ened, and thus enabled all the teams to get through their shooting at the different ranges at the same time, and also allowed of the whole of the shooting being finished at a much earlier hour than formerly. The shooting all round showed a distinct improvement on previous years, the score of the winners of the shield, the Napier Guards, being 1017 as against 941 made by last year’s winners, the Napier Rifles. In the individual scoring Color-Sergeant Humphries (Hastings Rifles) headed the list last year with a score of 94, but this was beaten on Saturday by Private Mole (Napier Rifles) who put on the fine score of 97 out of a possible 105. Private Howard, (Napier Guards) put on the possible at 500 yards, and no less than 11 competitors put on scores of over 90. Very complete arrangements had been made by the members of the local corps for the success of the “ shoot,” and the visitors were loud in their praise of their efforts. Mr J. Watts had charge of the catering department and needless to say, provided an excellent luncheon for his many patrons. Messrs F. W. Williams (Napier) and W. H. Nelson (Woodville) fulfilled the duties of range officers in a very capable manner. At the conclusion of the shooting, the shield and cash prizes were presented to the winners by Mr Coleman, who congratulated the recipients in a few well chosen remarks.
