Whittington. , Glorious weather prevailed on the King’s Birthday, when the Waipawa County Racing Club held their meeting on the course of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, at Hastings, which had been kindly lent for the occasion. There was a good attendance considering the strong counter attractions, and some capital sport was witnessed. Speculation was fair, Mr Abrahams putting the sum of £2301 through the machines during the day. Mr Bone I provided a capital luncheon and liquid refreshments were dispensed by Mr : Me Duff. Eight events were numbered on the 1 programme and hostilities began with £ the Maiden Hack Race, which fell to the lot of Mr Rathbone’s splendidly 1 bred Lingerer, who had no difficulty 1 in stalling off all opposition and win- i ning easily. Mangatera had little ' trouble in landing the Hurdles and 1 Welter and Ogle had somewhat of a lucky win in the Hack Handicap. c Nine faced the starter for the Waipawa Handicap, and after a good set to, the order past the man in the box was Menura, Kowhete and Daphne. £ Eight sported silk for the Nursery Handicap in which Liquify carried Mr F. Winifred’s colours to victory, t Mr A. Lord’s Assayer, who was quickly off the mark, settled Mon- 1 gonui’s pretensions in the November Handicap, Kowhete being third. £ Convoy, who was voted a good thing for the Hack Flying, was first past the post, followed by Jingle Consistent. Hughes’ ch m Jingle, aged, 8-5 [Noble] . 0 When the flag fell Ogle took a ten lengths’ lead, with Jingle next, while Apres and Culcita were lying alongside of each other. Rounding the railway bend Ogle increased his lead, and Apres set sail after him. When opposite the second stand Apres had nearly caught the Waterfall gelding, but the effort proved too much, and the outsider coming on again, won by three lengths from Apres, who just beat Culcita for third place. WAIPAWA COUNTY HANDICAP, Of 40 sovs; second horse 5 so’vs from the stake; 1 mile and a furlong. 117 Hon. J. D. Ormond’s b f Menura, 3yrs, by Flintlock— Lyrebird, 7-3 (Pickering) . 1 30 Mr G. Hunter’s b f Kowhete, 3yrs, 6-10 (M’Neill) . . 2 53 Mr J. T. Blake’s b m Daphne, aged, 7-13 (Neale) . . 3 —26 Warwick 9-0 [Woolley], 39 Tigress 8-3 [Sweeney], 27 Tirea 7-12, [Williams], 17 Whitirea 7-4 [Noble], 29 Kiwa 6-10 [M‘Kinnon], and 21 The Weaver 7-0 [Tod] also started. Warwick, Tirea and Tigress took up the running passing the stand. At the back Tirea was in front, with Kowhete lying fourth, Daphne next, and Menura sixth. At the railway bend the field closed up, and Kowhete, Daphne, and Menura were the first to enter the straight. When fairly on the home run Menura came with a strong spurt and won by three lengths from Kowhete, who was a couple of lengths in front of Daphne. Time, lmin 59sec. Fireaway led for some distance, when Liquefy displaced her, and the Auckland bred filly won somewhat easily by two lengths from - Camelot, with Fireaway third and Bijoutry next. Time 50sec. The start was a bud one, Mongonui and Assayer breaking away several lengths in front of the field, while Culcita got badly left. This pair raced into the straight, but Assayer won easily at the finish from the Carbine mare, with Kowhete a fair third. Time, lmin 17sec. Totalisator Total, £442 ; dividend, £5 15s.

FLYING HACK HANDICAP. Of 30 sovs; second horse to receive 5 sovs from the stake; 6 furlongs. 90 Mr J. J. A lot of trouble was experienced at the posj by Ogle, and Convoy jumped off and ran a couple of before could be pulled up. When the flag finally fell Rain and Arrival

were the first to show, and Jingle came up at the bend with Convoy next. A good race resulted down the straight in Convoy winning after a close finish with Jingle, Consistent third, and Arrival fourth. Time, lmin, 19sec. Totalisator—Total, £413, dividend, £4 2s.
