The Waipawa Mail. Published Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Thursday, December 27, 1900.

An account of tho Christmas decorations in Waipawa will be found on the first page. The reading matter on the fourth page consists of reports of the Porangahau and llampden races. Mr W. H. Bawdon was'- ordained in tho Napier Cathedral, last Sunday. Mr Daniels, of the Te Auto Hotel, had the refreshment rooms artistically decorated for the Christmas season. The annual meeting of Court 6552, A.0.F., takes place to-morrow (Friday) night. At the Court, on Monday last, Percy Emannuel was sentenced by Messrs Johnson and Inglis, Justices, to one month’s imprisonment for vagrancy. The tops of tho Ruahines have a good coating of snow, which has fallen during the last week. This gives some idea of the unseasonable weather we have experienced. Tho matron of the Waipawa District Hospital reports as follows for the week ended Dec. 15th : Patients in hospital, M 16, F 6 ; admitted during the week, M 1, F 4; discharged, M 3, F 2; diod, MO, F 0. The band played a number of selections in front of the post office, on Christmas Eve, which were highly appreciated. Later in the evening they played a number of carols in various parts of the township. A great number of Waipawa residents have left to spond their Christmas holidays in other parts of the colony. It is some years now since so many have been absent from the town at this season of the year. We have to acknowledge cards, con-

veying Christmas greetings, from Mr C. H. Mills M.H.R., Mr C. Hall, M.H.R., the staffs of the Waipawa and Danevirke railway stations and tho Examiner and Feildiny Star. W© heartily reoiprooate the good wishes expressed. The Provincial Grand Master and the Corresponding Secretary will pay an official visit to the Loyal Abbotsford Lodge to-night. After the business has been transacted they will be entertained at supper, which will be spread upon the stage of the hall. The following books have just been added to the Waipukurau public library: Master Christian, (Corelli), Three Little Maids, (Ethel Turner), Isle of Unrest, (Merriman), Double Thread, (Fowler), With Edged tools, (Merriman), Married Miss Binks (Winter), Cruise of the Midge (Michael Scott), Fruitfulness (Zola), Purple Robe (Hocking), Siege of Mafeking (Hamilton). The blind entertainers will appear in the Oddfellows’ Hall to-morrow night. Apart from the deserving nature of the cause, the members of the company are entertainers of more than average merit, and with their versatile gifts will have no trouble in keoping their audience thoroughly entertained and amused for a couple of hours. A dance was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Hampden, after the races yesterday, when about 30 couples wore present. The music was supplied by Mr H. Liddle, and gave every satisfaction. Songs were contributed by Mr Brandou and an extra was played by Miss Brandon. Light refreshments were supplied, and about 2 a.m., the night’s amusement was brought to a close. The weather during the holidays was none of the best. Early on Christmas Day heavy showers fell, but later on tho sun broke through the clouds and there was every prospect of a fine day. In the afternoon, however, a cold wind sprung up, accompanied by showers, which made it very disagreeable. Showers began falling yesterday morning, much to the disappointment of intending pleasure seekers. High, cold winds prevailed throughout tho day. At the annual meeting of tho Loyal Ruahine Lodge of Oddfellows, Hampden, the following officers were installed:—G.M., Bro. S. Vincent; N.G., Bro. W. F. Gundrie ; V.G., Bro. D. Vesty; E.S., Bro. W. Hobson. The N.G. appointed Bro. H. Mitchell as R.H.S., and Bro. S. Wood as tyler, and the V.G. appointed Bro. G. Floyd as his R.fl.S. After the business of the lodge was concluded, P.G. Bro. M‘Millan, on behalf of tho brethren, presented Bro. Knapp (who has been lately invalided from the Transvaal, where he was serv--1 ing with the Second Contingent) with a momber’s set of regalia, as a slight token of the esteem with which the Lodge regarded his action in volunteering for ! the front. Bro. Knapp feelingly responded, thanking the brethren for their kind wishes.
