Mr Abrahams thought they should get a legal opinion before they dealt with Mr McGreevy’s letter. Messrs Scrimgeour and Rathbone took a similar view. The latter speaker alluded to the difficulty of obtaining a site for the Town Board office. It had been said that could obtain a sita on the Police Court section, but he doubted very much if one could bo got there on any terms, but if they’ did, the Government would only allow them to remain there on sufferance. These remarks were corroborated by Mr Abrahams. Mr Rilhbono suggested that the Board’s solicitor should bo consulted, and Mr Bonnett agreeing, this course was adopted. Mr Lougbnan attended and the following resolution, proposed by Mr Rathbone and seconded by Mr Abrahams, was carried unanimously That the Board recogrise that the contract for the pur chase of section No 30, Abbotsford, is illegal and in contravention of the provi sions of the Local Bodies Cjntractors Act, 1885. That the purchase money tendered by Mr McGreevy be accepted and the Board execute such re conveyance of the laud as their solicitor shall approve.” Mr Scrimgeour proposed and Mr Rathbone seconded the following resolution which was also carried unanimously : “That this Board wishes to record its opinion that the said contract was a contract in every way advantageous to ihe inhabitants of tho district ; that the pr r ce paid w s the market value of the land and no more ; that the contract was entered into honajide and in ignorance of Ihe state of the law.” It was understood that the Chairman should take over the books and accounts from the clerk as previously arranged.
