Mr Cadman, who returned last night, says the object of the trip over the Stratford route was to become acquainted with the nature of the countiy. He is favourably impressed with the laud, especially

in the proximity to Stratford, and would like to see it opened for settlement. The Minister says that the railway by either the main trunk or Stratford route is out of the question at present, as it would necessitate raising a large loan. A deputation numbering about 50, and representing a portion of Te Aro, waited on Mr Seddon this morning with reference to the Te Aro railway extension. They pointed out that certain s*atements had appeared iu the newspapers to the effect that the Government did not intend to go on with the railway, and tenders had been called simply to strengthen the hands of the Ministerial candidate in the recent election, and the deputation waited on him to obtain his assurance that there was no truth in the statements. Mr Seddon said it was purely an accident that tenders for the work happened to be called during the late election contest ; but as a matter of fact the preliminaries had been arranged a long time before the election was thought of ; besides the Government were only carrying out the will of Parliament in going on with the extension. The delay which had occurred in accepting tenders was due to a dispute with the City Council and the Haabor Board over details of construction, and he assured the deputation all obstacles will be removed and tenders accepted within about a week. Shortly after midnight a fire broke out in the ship Everest, 1260 tons, which was in dock, being repaired, with 350 tons of shale on board, 2000 having been taken out. The fire brigade and steam tug poured great masses of water into her with no offect, and holes had to be cut in the bottom and water let in the dock before the fire could be stopped. The ship is much damaged, the cabin being gutted, and the rudder plate destroyed. The store-room was burned out. The insurances are unknown. The vessel was bound for Liverpool from Sydney, and put in for repairs.
