The House made better progress in committee on the Customs tariff during the night, and succeeded in finishing the section dealing with specific duties. The duty on candles was reduced by a halfpenny per lb, and raw coffee and cocoa were placed on the free list. The duties on cereals were passed by 53 to 27. The Committee adjourned at 2 o’clock this morning. Nearly £6OOO has been placed on the estimates as an annual grant to the Imperial Institute. A demonstration has been made in favor of Bungebah for th« Newmarket Handicap at 100 to 12, and 1000 to 50 has been accepted about Steadfast, Titan, St. Blaize, and Bengal. The second of the three test matches arranged to be played between Lord Sheffield's team of English cricketers and a combined Australian eleven was commenced here to-day. The Australians went in first, the innings closing for 144, to which Lyons contributed 41, Moses 28, Turner 15, and Bruce 15. In the trundling department Attewell took one wicket for 25 runs, and Lohmann eight for 50. When the stumps were drawn forth© day the Englishmen’s score stood at 38 without the loss of a wicket—Grace not out 25, and Abel not out 13. The Sydney Deposit Bank has suspended payment. MELBOURN E, Yesterday The Government have piomised a grant of £15,000 towards the representation of the colony at Chicago, if the exhibitors will raise £SOOO. They think there should be only one Australasian Court, each colony, however, controlling its own exhibits. ADELAIDE, Yesterday The working of steamers in port on Sundays is prohibited in every case with the exception of the landing of mails.
