The House made better progress in committee on the Customs tariff during the night, and succeeded in finishing the section dealing with specific duties. The duty on candles was reduced by a halfpenny per lb, and raw coffee and cocoa were placed on the free list. The duties on cereals were passed by 53 to 27. The Committee adjourned at 2 o’clock this morning. Nearly £6OOO has been placed on the estimates as an annual grant to the Imperial Institute. A demonstration has been made in favor of Bungebah for th« Newmarket Handicap at 100 to 12, and 1000 to 50 has been accepted about Steadfast, Titan, St. Blaize, and Bengal. The second of the three test matches arranged to be played between Lord Sheffield's team of English cricketers and a combined Australian eleven was commenced here to-day.
