DANEVIRKE.

(own correspondent.} There was a meeting of St. John’s Vestry on Friday night, the Rev. E. Robertshawe presiding. It was reported that the timber for the Sunday school would amount to 20,600 ft., that the order* were well in hand, that timber would be stacked on the ground in about a week. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £lO3 13s. Accounts amounting to £2l 8s 2s were passed for payment. The parsonage improvement committee reported that the painting and other improvements had been effected at a cost of £35 12s Id. The committee were thanked for having carried out the work so satisfactorily. It was decided to employ the verger to collect the pew rents in future. It was resolved to place notice board in the porch and church for the purpose of postingap the amount of the offertories, hymns to be sung, &c. It was resolved to meet again in a week, the subscriptions and pew rent! to be collected in the meantime. The stewards of the Jockey Club will meet on Monday evening to settle up the accounts of Thursday’s meeting. It is anticipated that there will be a handsome surplus. Some trouble is expected over the protest lodged against Freewill in the Flying, the owner of the second horse having stated his intention of “going for ” the stewards to recover the stake. It will be rememberei that a protest wae lodged against Freewill on the grouud that his owner had not given a list of the horse’s performances at time of nomination, but the stewards did not uphold the protest, hence the trouble. There is a little building going on just now. Messrs Cameron and Co. aie engaged putting up a shop and billiardroom close to the Junction Hotel, for Mr Clark, and Messrs Christiansen and Sons made a start to-day with Messrs Younghusband and Co’s, new store. Both these buildings will considerably add to the appearance of the main street. I hear that a half-mile flutter for £lO a side has beeu arranged between Mr Allardice’B Harold and Mr Ryan’s Benchman. The race will come off towards the end of next week. The Danevirke School Committee held a special meeting to-night to nominate candidates for the two vacancies on the Education Board. Messrs J. G. Gilbred and H. P. Cohen were the chosen ones. The Horticultural Show at OrmoDdville this afternoon was, I believe, fairly successful. Particulars have not yet reached BQP.

Ihe late Mr Nicolaysen was buried te* day, not on Thursday as you stated in your last issue.

The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay District I 0.0. F., M.U., was held in the local lodge-room this afternoon. The following delegates were present :—BroG.M. Krogh (in the chair), D.G.M. A. B. lioodan; Hastings: P.G’s Bros. Land, Lose and W. G. Martin ; Tavistock : P.G. Bro. w. Jones.—The G.M., Bro. Krogh, delivered a lengthy address upon the affairs nf the Order, from which it appeared that the number of members on January Ist, 1891, was 785 ; joined during year 162; left and died 84, leaviog on December 31st 863 members, or an increase of 78. The Sick and Funeral Fund showed an increase for the year of £1302 17s Id, the total fond on December 31st being £12,433 8s Id. The Management Fond showed a credit balance of £64 4s 9d on same date. During the year the Kaikora Lodge had been dissolved and the members transferred to Abbotsford Lodge. Attention was called to the unsatisfactory state of the Victoria Lodge (Porangahau), and the G.M. suggested that a committee should be appointed to consider the best means of placing the lodge upon a more satisfactory footing. It was also suggested that the lodge should alter their meeting night, so as to facilitate visits from the district offioers. At present many lodges meet on the same night, and that rendered it difficult for the district officer to visit them. The following levies were recomended : Funeral fund, Is per member ; management fund, Is per member on December 31st, and Is per member admitted during half-year ended December 31st. The address concluded with an acknowledgement of the assistance afforded the Grand Master by bis co-district officers. Upon the motion of Bros. Land and Sidey, a hearty vote of thanks was recorded to Bro. Krogh for ids address, and it was resolved that it should be printed in the minutes of the proceedings. Bros. Sidey and Bee were appointed a committee to see what was to be done with the Victoria Lodge. Permission was given to Loyal Forest Home to meet monthly in future. Bros. Sidey and Fielder were elected delegates to attend the Conference of Friendly Societies to be held in Nelson on April 7th. Consideration was then given to a series of resolutions on thelorder paper having reference to certain matters to be discussed by the Conference. The most important of these was a motion moved by Bro Martin, that it is desirable that an A.M.C. and Board of Directors should be established in the Colony, provided the cost of the same will be administered with due economy. Bro Louden seconded the motion pro forma, but after considerable discussion the motion was negatived. Another motion that was rejected waß one to the effect that it is desirable that members of Friendly Societies should be alloweJ to insure for a higher payment at death than at present. The delegates considered that with the present faculties for Life Insurance it would be unwise to hamper the Order with any such proposal. The other motions, of which there were four bore upon detail work in connection with'the Order and were duly carried The lodgebook examiner made a favorable report upon the state of the books in the various lodges.—The levies proposed in the Grand Master’s address were agreed to.—Resolved that the salaries of the district officers remain as at present and that the next district meeting be held at Napier. The elections of Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master were then proceeded with. For the former D.P.G.M A. E. Joll was returned unopposed ; for the Deputy, Bro A. A. George and Hitchman were nominated, and upon a ballot being taken the former was declared elected. Popplewell; corresponding secretary, Bro J. B. Fielder. The District Officers were also elected relieving and examining officers. The customary votes of thanks were then passed, and in the course of a eulogistic reference to the services of Bro Krogh, Bro. Sidey moved that all retiring officers in future be presented with a new set of regalia, commencing with Bro Krogh. This was carried unanimously. After the transaction of some more formal business the members adjourned to the Masonic Hotel, where an elegant dinner had been laid by Mrs Allariice. Ample justice was done to the bill of fare, and a toast, that of the health of Bro O’Leary, as the oldest Oddfellow present, was proposed, duly honoured, and responded to. Subsequently a very enjoyable social dance was held in the Town Hall, at which there were a goodly numoer present. The gathering, which was Df a most harmonious description, lasted ill the small hours and served as a pleasmt wind up to the first district meeting leld in Danevirke.
