SPORTING.

Danevirke Jockey Club

Gown correspondent.}

The annual race meeting of the Danevirke Jockey Club was held at Tahoraite yesterday under circumstances that were

in every way propitious. The wet and dismal weather of the previous day gave way to bright sunshine and accordingly there was a numerous gathering at the trysting place, although the attendance was hardly so large as had been antici pated. Sport commenced with the Maiden Hurdles, for which nine of the ten horses on the card faced the starter. Tiratu was a warm favorite, and Arawa was also well supported, but Hurricane boiled the pot over properly and the few who were in the know bad the satisfaction of pocketing the substantial dividend of £37 178. In the Handicap Hurdle Race Mr P. Hunter’s Rough was too many for anything els©, and taking his fences in beautiful style simply romped home an easy winner. The Maiden Plate brought out a field of seven, of which Turehu was most fancied, 185 tickets out of 430 in the machine being on him. The public opinion was tolerably correct in this case, Mr Donnelly’s colt securing an easy victory. The start was not a good one, and coming after the wretched start in the Maiden Hurdles gave rise to a considerable amount of dissatisfaction. However for the rest of the day the fields were despatched in splendid order and left nothing to grumble at. The next event was the Danevirke Handicap of 60sovs, one mile and three quarters. T. Rose was the only absentee, and the five starters all carried a fair amount of money, Mr Gaisford’s handsome b m Maid of Lome having the call. Mr Pilmer’B Liquidation was next in demand, then Link, while a good many pinned their faith on old Penguin. The field got away well together, the Maid being the first to show in front. Penguin went up to her at the back of the course but fell away again, and Maid of Lome assumed command again. A rattling good race ensued, resulting at the finish in rather an easy victory for the winner, Link a good second, and consistent old “ Pen” third. The Selling Race was won on the post by Scraps after a desperate tussle with Hurricane. The latter horse slipped when about half the journey had been accomplished and lost two or three

lengths in consequence, and a good many people thought that but for this mishap he would have woo. The Ladies’ Purse Handicap brought out ten horses, Freewill being considered the best of the bnnch ; and sure eoough he pulled the race off with a bit to spare. A protest was entered against him upon the ground that his performances had not been given at time of nomination ; but, as it was shown that the handicapper had given him list with the knowledge of bis past performances, the Stewards decided not to disturb his win. The day’s sport was brought to a concluclusion with the Flying Handicap, tor which there were nine starters. This was thought to be a safe thing either for Maid of Lome or Javeline, the latter having been kept specially for the event. How- ! ever, neither won, Mr Martene Ropiha’s Musketeer proving too many for the favorites, and winning a fast race with | ease. Messrs Cohen and Stock put £3099 through the machine, a considerable advance on last year’s amount. Taking it altogether, the meeting was a very successful one, and will result in a substantial profit to the Club. Subjoined are the results : Maiden Hurdle Race, Of 20 sovs ; 1£ miles. Mr M.
