The Labor Electoral League Conference resolved to add the abolition of the Upper House and the substitution of the Swiss principle of Referendum as planks of their platform. Motions were carried favoring the prohibition of sub-letting contracts, and the exclusion of inferior races. Motions providing for State Socialism and the abolition of party government were rejected. It is believed that Davis, one of the levanting directors of the Australian Mercantile and Guarantee Society, was arrested in Shanghai, but released, as there was no evidence of identification.
A severe earthquake was experienced to-day at Kiama, 92 miles south of Sydney. The shock, which lasted twenty seconds, extended along the coast line for a considerable distance. No damage has been reported. In an intercolonial cricket match between Victoria and New South Wales the former were victorious by an innings and 15 runs.
MELBOURNE, Yesterday
At the wool sales 13,500 bales were catalogued. There was a fair attendance of buyers, and good competition for best qualities. The price of crossbred wool remains at unchanged, while merinos are from par to five per cent below the ruling prices at the December series. The Argus commends Lord Knutsford for promising to submit the name of the Governor-designate of New Zealand to the Government of the colony before the final selection is made.
