The result is the discovery of a series of medicines manufactured from native trees aud plants, and which have been proved undeniably to be of almost marvellous efficacy. It is to the credit of the Catholic Church in the colony that one of its missionary Sisters has distinguished herself in this way, probably conferring on the world a benefit, little, if anything, inferior to that conferred, for example, by the Jesuit Fathers who discovered the curative properties of the Peruvian bank. Not only suffering humanity but science itself owes a debt to this lady, who has made it acquainted with properties of natural products, hitherto unsuspected, and has enriched the pharmacopoeia. We have, further, in the matter an instance of how religious devotion is calculated to quicken the faculties and to develop the best qualities of human nature. Sister Mary Joseph is to be warmly commended for tier discoveries, and, indeed, the community generally may be congratulated on them.”
