Ormondville Town Board.

(own correspondent.)

The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held on Thursday evening. Present—Messrs Forward (chair), Pike, Groom, and O’Leary. On the motion of Mr Groom, seconded by Mr Pike, the minutes of previous meeting were confirmed as read. Correspondence received—

Frdm Colonial Secretary asking for information to enable the Government to make out a return of the names and number of local bodies, total revenue for the year ended March 1889, and the amount spent in salaries, office expenditure, &c.—Clerk directed to forward required information. From District Lands Office, Napier, enclosing schedule of aliquot parts of land revenue, accrued from February (£5 12s 4d) and asking for proposals of expenditure to be submitted ; when approved, money would be paid to credit of the Board.

The Clerk said that £4 Is 4d was on account of property at Makotuku, v. £1 lie due to Ormondville. The Ormondville portion should go to make up for overdraft on Carr and Ross streets, these roads having overdrawn. Mr Groom said the amount by which these roads were overdrawn was supposed to come out of the rates, and the land revanue should be kept apart. Clerk to inform Lauds Board that the money would be spent on Carr and Smith streets. Accounts were received as under:

Cox, caning metal Makotuku, 10s ; L. Nielsen, labor on Russell’s and Tower’i

road, £5 8s 6d. R. Russell, salary, stamps, stationery, and office olsaning for six months, £ls 15s 6d.

Mr O’Leary asked who was looking after the roads.

The Chairman said he (Chairman) was looking after the roads. Mr O'Leary said hs did not approve of the way the work was done. The mud should be taken out of the wheel ruts, and they should be filled with coarse metal, but at present clay was scraped into the ruts; naturally enough they remained soft, and the first traffic that passed over the roads left them in as bad a state as tfrer. If the roads were to be kept in s proper manner it would be cheaper in the end to make a good job of what was done, even if the first cost was a little heavier. The ruts should he cleaned out and boulders put at the bottom, and ordinary gravel on top of that, then the work would be of a lasting character. The Chairman said the next Board should Ist the maintenance by ooutrsct. Mr O’Leary said they would never make a job of it the way they were going on. On the motion of Mr Pike, Mr Groom seconding, the accounts were passed for payment. Mr Groom would like to ask if any money had been paid over to the Board on account of pound fees, the pound bad been open a long time now. The Clerk said the ponndkeeper had promised to have a statement laid before this meeting. Mr Groom said the pound had been open more than thee months, and as this was the last meeting of the Board, ths statement should have been laid before them. He would move that the poundkeeper be requested to present a statement of accounts. The Chairman said it would be as well to adjourn the meeting for a week in order to receive the statement. Mr Groom agreed, and added to his motion that the statement be received at the adjourned meeting. Seconded by Mr Pike and carried. Mr Groom said that the amount of £5 had been voted towards improving the recreation reserve, and he would move • that the money he passed for payment, i subject to the approval of the Works’ Committee (Messrs Red ward and Groom); > seconded by Mr Pike, and carried. Ths Clerk said a motion should be t passed, authorising him to call for appli- > cations for the office of Clerk, Treasurer, 1 Valuer, and Rate-collecter to the Board, ) the invitation to he by advertisement, and ) to close on the first night of meeting of s new members.

Mr Groom moved that the Clerk advertise, calling for applications for the office of Clerk &c., to the Ormondville Town Board, to close before next ordinary meeting of the Board ; seconded by Mr Forward, and carried. The Clerk said the Contractor for Forthergill’s road formation wanted the pipes for culverts. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Overseer asking him to order the pipes at once. The Chairman said that the contractor for Fothergill’s road wanted a progress payment. Mr Pike had inspected the work, and thought him entitled to a payment ; he did not ask for a large one. On the motion of Mr Groom, seconded by Mr Pike, a progress payment of £lO was made.

Messrs Groom, O’Leary, and the Chairman were appointed to sign the rate book on the motion of Mr Pike, Mr Groom seconding pro forma. On the motion of Mr Groom, seconded by. Mr Pike the meeting was then adjourned to Tuesday 9th inst.
