NAPIER NOTES.

(by telegraph.)

(own correspondent.) This Day.

A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, when the following resolution was carried :—“This Chamber views with regret the present state of affairs in this colony and Australia, which has been brought about without any sufficient reason ; and they sympathize with the Union Steam Company in their present difficulty. They also regret the action taken by the union societies, as there has been no dispute of any serious nature in New Zealand which has justified the action taken by the Maiitime Council. The Chamber will co-operate with the other Chambers, and use ever}' endeavor to bring about a settlement of the present trouble. A meeting of members of the Chamber and the tradesmen is called for Thursday, when the matter will be finally considered. The s.s. Waihora arrived this morning, and was tendered by ihe Ahuriri, which was manned by the clerks of the various offices, whose efforts in the way of seamanship were provocative of much amusement.

The wharf laborers met last night, a large number being present, and it was decided to expel Louis Dean, the> man who refused to strike on Sunday; and further, that no member was in future to converse with him. This morning Capt. TonkiD having left his bed of illness, Dean was told that his services were no longer required ; and from this it will be seen that he has done no good by contravening the laws of the Union of which he is now no longer a member.
