US. TO STAND THIS SEASON, At the Tavistook Stables, ‘WAIPUKUE.AU, H. 8., The Thoroughbred Stallion BLACK ROSE, Bred by Mr Redwood, of Nelson. BLACK ROSE is by An tores—Rosalind, whose performances on the New Zealand Turf stamp him as one of the most valoable Entire Horses now in existence. Black Rose is a brown horse, standing 15f hands, with immense quarters, loins, bone, and muscle, and he has proved himself a stayer, having won the Canterbury Derby, beating Fusilier, Liverpool, Ugly Buck, Water King, Carlton, Dime, Pearl, and Lady Evelyn. The following day he ran a good second to the redoubtable Welcome Jack in the Canterbury Cup of 2£ miles, which race heled in to the distance post, where, through swerving at the crowd, he allowed the son of Miss Flat to secure the Judge’s eye a neck ahead of him. He subsequently won the Island Bay Cup in a common canter, beating Leonora, Ugly Buck, and four others. BLACK ROSE’S TABULATED PEDIGREE IS ANNEXED. He will serve mares at six guineas each. The best paddocking accommodation is provided, but no responsibility undertaken. Danevirke agent, B. Dennehy, who will receive orders and collect fees. The Superior Thoroughbred Entire H E RCTTLES, Bred by Mr Murphy, of Spring Creek, and raced by Mr Redwood. Got by Ravensworth, dam Plover, by Sir Hercules, Ravensworth by Touchstone, Fair Jean, Verulum, Fair Queen, by Pantaloon. HERCULES is by a bay horse, stands 152 hands high, combines the best of blood, with good bone and immense power, and has proved himself a good horse on the turf. At the Canterbury meeting in 1876 won the Grand Stand Handicap, beating six others; in the same year woo the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, 2 miles in 4 min. 4£ secs., beating Fishhook and Maori Weed. The Australasian in speaking of the Sire Hercules blood lately, remarked : “ No family has gained such a reputation as that which descends from the Colonialbred Sir Hercules. In contests of every description the representatives of this line have achieved more than their share of popular triumph, from the time Mr Tait carried all before him with old Cossack (brother to Waiinea), down to the present time, when Kingsborough, Dagworth, Reprieve, Melbourne, Sterling, Fitz-Yatterdon, Ringwood, Valentia, Calumny, and many others with a dash of the old blood, carried the owners’ colors to the fore in some of the hardest tußselß of the year.”* Terms—Five guineas each maro. 1890. TO STAND THIS SEASON, AT WHITTLEWOOD, ASHLEY-CLINTON, The Thoroughbred Racing Sire TURQUOISE. TURQUOISE is a brown horse, with excellent quality and of good bone and substance, suitable for getting firstclass hacks and steeplechasers as well as thoroughbred flat racers of the first order. He was bred by Mr Samuel Gardiner, of Bundoora Park, of Victoria, and is got by Tubal Cain from Tobaz, a descendant of the great Juliet family which have given to Australia more first-class racehorses than any other strain in the colonies. Martini-Henry, Nordenfeldt, Carbine, Sardonyx, First Water, Goldsborough, Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe (sire of Trident and Navigator), and a host of other good ones are all descended from this familyTurquoise has proved himself to be a good performer on the turf, having at all distances, and under heavy weights, carried his colors te victory. As a three-year-old he was thought to be almost as good as that champion Welcome Jack. The following are some of his performances :—Won Stewards’ Handicap, six furlongs, at the C.J.C. Spring Meeting, 1884, carrying 7st lOlbs ; won Taranaki J.C. Handicap, 2 miles, at T.J.C. Autumn meeting, 1885, carrying Bst 101 b; won Easter Handicap, If miles, and Autumn Handicap, 1£ miles, at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting, 1885, carrying Ost 31ba and 9st lOlbs respectively ; won Ladies’ Bracelet at A.R.C. Steeplechase Meeting, 1887, carrying 12st; won Consolation Handicap at H.B J.C.
