Ormondville Road Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ormondville Road Board was held on Thursday evening. Present Messrs Packer (chair), Nielsen, Henson, and Baines. Minutes of previous meeting read, and on the motion of Mr Nielsen, seconded by Mr Henson, were confirmed as read. Correspondence read From District Lands Office, Napier, stating that £lO 2s had accrued from May Ist to July 3Ut on account of refunded thirds, and asking for the usual proposal*; if approved, the money would be paid to Board’s credit.—Reoeived. From J. S. Andrews, claiming payment for carting drain pipes. Mr Henson said he had told Mr Andrews to do the carting, and as the amount charged would be a small one he would guarantee payment. Clerk to pay the money. From L. Nielsen claiming one day’s wage for work on Nielsen’s road. As this was so small an amount Mr Nielsen suid he would let it stand over. From W. Castles claiming £5 3s Gd for work on Newling’s road. The Clerk called attention to the fact that the loan account was overdrawn, and that the contractors’ deposit account showed too much to credit, this being due to the system of diawing cheques when the meetings were in full swing, and some cheques not beiug headed. It would be necessary to transfer money from the deposit and general account to bring the accounts straight. Transfer to be made. Mr Nielsen complained of the wretched state of one part of Church street extension.—Mr Baines said there was no money available to do any work there at present. —Mr Neilson said something ought to be done to give the peopli excess to their land.—Mr Henson said he quite recognised this, but a check would have to be put on expenditure for a time.

The Chairman said Church street wanted to be continued. People living there could not get to Makotuku without going a long way round.—Mr Baines said that the owners of some of the land then were going to burn their bush, and when this was done the fire would clear tbs road.—Mr Packer said the place where the bush would be burnt was away from where tho clearing was needed, and wonld not help in aoy way. Mr Hensen said that work was needed on Buckland’s road. The land abutting on that road paid a large amount yearly in rates, and people were beginning to grumble because they had no roads there. He had spoken to one man who wanted to settle on his land, but could not get to it. The Chairman said that though there were large sections held for speculative purposes near Bucklaod’s road, not one was living there, and he thought it more important to give people who lived oa their land means ef access, than to make roads where no one was living. Mr Nielsen said it would be only simple justice to give a passable track to people who lived on their land. Mr Hensen moved that Castle’s account, be paid, seconded by Mr Baines sod carried. Mr Henson asked if the Clerk had done anything further in the matter of cloeiof the disused part of Bucklnnd’s road. The Clerk said he had not moved further in the matter. He had gone u far as he hed been instructed to go, and at last meeting he had reported to the Board. A protest had been against closing tbs road, had been read at last meeting, and no action had been taken. Mr Baines said that the man who hid entered a protest had consented former!?, and he did not think he had a right ts withdraw his consent afterwards. He (Mr Baines) had sown grass-seed on the road, and he thought they should go 01 with the matter now. Mr Henson said it would be better to be a pound wise aud a penny foolish than to be a penny wise and a pound foolish ; sod he thought it would be better to hats advice before going any farther in the matter. Mr Baines said the clerk could look Am matter up, and if he thought it wise to consult a solicitor he could do so, tod report at next meeting. Mr Nielsen asked if the poisoned gnh had ooine yet. The Clerk said it had, and the Board might as well give a cheque for half tho cost. On the motion of Mr Nielsen, Mr Bin* seconding, the vote of £5 was ordered to be paid. Mr Henson said he had inspected the domain, and that the men should receivt * Progress payment. He would move for £5 to be paid, seconded by Mr Packer and c arried. Mr Nielsen asked why unpaid rates bid not been sued for. The Clerk said that those whe were in arrears had asked him to wait a few day* longer as they had not the money. Tbsn there were several properties that bed changed hands, and he did not think tbff could win a case against a man wboee name was not on the roll. Of course, they could go for the former owners, but in most cases it would be throwing awsf money. He was quite prepared to sue f® r unpaid rates, but if he went for one or two he would go for all. On the motion of Mr Packer, seconded by Mr Baines, the clerk was instructed to sue for oil unpaid rates at once. This was all the business.
