DANEVIRKE.
(OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The Church of England Building Committee met on Tuesday night to consider plans of a new church. Ft vas decided to send the plans back to the architects, Messrs Aiken and Clere,of Wellington and Wanganui, in order to get the exact quantities of all materials. As soon as these are again to hand the timber will be put on the ground to season and tenders will be called soon afterwards. When completed, I understand, the church will present a very handsome appearance. The Presbyterians are also having a church built. It will be finished shortly after New Year. The plans for the latter have been prepared by Mr Lamb, of Napier, in a very 7 neat and homely style. So you will sec that our spiritual welfare is being well looked after. That our worldly ; ffaira, generally, are on a good footing is evident from the number of buildings going up in every direction ; and if they nre only left to themselves and time, the place and its inhabitants will go ahead steadily. The Junction liotol, under the management of Mr Dennehy, was opened on Saturday last and the Mangatera Hotel, owned by Mr Friie, on Wednesday. Both of them are largo, well-finished and wellappointed hotels, and they will no doubt get their share of tho trade. I think, that the Cemetery Trustees might bestir themselves a little and try aud get their trust fenced io and put into decent order. It is not pleasant for people, who happen to have friends or relations’ graves there to spend time and money in eroding ornamental fences round them and then see them knocked about by cattle and horses. ZTI hear a party is thinking of building a large Town Hall, with theatre, lodgerootn, &c. The want ot such a place is much felt, tho present Hull boing rather small and incomplete, and altogether out of date. The school children’s concert is to be held on Thursday. The programme appears very promising, but I fancy that the youngsters over-estimate the value of their productions. A great many would gladly* spend one shilling for the pleasure of hearing the children sing, but two is found rather much. Land is selling freely 7 here. I hear of sections changing hands every day 7 , and a good few outsiders arc being attracted to our locality.
