DANEVIRKE
[from our own correspondent.]
I hear that Mr J. W. McKay has acquired the lease of Messrs Cadman and Co’s bush and that he is going to erect a large mill plant on the block. Instead of the best portion of this timber industry being removed to another part of the province it will for the future be confined to its proper quarter. This in itself should be considered good news for Danevirke. Mr McKay is a much respected late resident of Whangarei, Auckland Province where he has made his mark ns an energetic public man. I have no doubt that the Danevirke people will be glad to hear of the acquisition of such a desirable settler. Mr McKay took over the former bush plant on Monday. Last night it was reported that a fatal accident had occurred not far from the township, by a horseman being thrown from his horse against a stump, while riding on the highway towards Talioraite. Ilis mate came in and asked Mr Allardice for a conveyance, which was readily granted, although it was late in the evening. On reaching the spot the sufferer was found lying on the ground scarcely conscious, but when he was brought into the cab lie came round considerably. As far as could be ascertained at the time a severe concussion of the brain was the only injury which could be surmised from two severe cuts in the scalp. Mr Allardice gave his friends the option of taking the sufferer back to Danevirke or bringing him on to Oringi or Woodvillo. They chose to convey him to the Oringi Station, where he is employed at present and where the conveyance, with its living and half living freight, arrived at an advanced hour. The victim of this accident had several relapses of unconsciousness wlnle being conveyed home. Not enough can be said about the prompt and willing way in which Mr Allardice spent the best part of the night in making the sufferer comfortable especially when the fact is brought out that instead of accepting the proferred £1 for the hire of the cab be ordered it to bo paid as a contribution to the Waipukurau Hospital.
