Another Shipping AccidentWellington, This day.
The Westport Coal Company’s steamer, Kawntiri, which left Wellington for Westport on Tuesday, returned to port this morning, and the captain reports that she struck Rangitoto Island, near D’Urville Island, at 10.40 p.m., on Tuesda}\ It appears that the chief officer was on deck at tho time and the weather was thick. 110 caught a glimpse of land a minute or two before tbo> vessel si ruck. The engines were reversed, but with no nvnil. Attempts wore made to kedge the vessel off, but unsuccessfully. Tho Captain then sent a boat to intercept the steamer Owniti, bound from Lyttleton to Westport, which was done, ami tho steamer came lo the assistance of the Kawatiri and managed to pull her off yesterday. The Kawatiri is making a little water and will go ou the slip to bo surveyed. Tho vessel is insured.
