Kaikora North Lodge of Oddfellows.
A number of traps left Waipawa'on Saturday evening, taking members of the Abbotsford Lodge of Oddfellows down to Kaikora, to be present at the opening ccremoDy of a new lodge in that township. The Abbotsford Lodge, one of tiro most prosperous and numerically strong in the colony, has thrown off many branches, and the Kaikora North Lodge is the latest offshoot from the parent tree. The matter of procuring the dispensation and seeing to the many forms was properly the duty of the C.S. Bro. Fielder, of Napier, whose energy in all that concerns this Friendly Society, is well known. But unhappily Bro. Fielder has for some time been laid up with sickness, and the whole of the work fell upon the willing shoulders of Bro. Wm. Brown, the equally hard working secretary of the Abbotsford Lodge. Nothing could have been more fortunate for the new Lodge, for the arrangements were attended to with a despatch that could not have been equalled had they been put in the hands of anyone else less fumilinr with the various forms nud technicalities connected with Oddfcllowship. The meeting at the Rechabite Hall was well attended, between 45 and 50 persons being present. The notabilities in the order were : D.G.M. Tong, presiding, P.G. McLean of Porangahau Lodge, acting as Deputy Grand Master, P.P.G.M. Brown, of Waipawa Lodge, acting as C.S. in place of Bro. Fielder. The opening ceremony was performed in the usual way, and the following members were appointed officers of the Lodge. P.G. Staines, of Waipawa, as Grand Master, Bio. F. J. Popplewell, Kaikora, as Noble Grand. Bro. K. Sporle, as V.G., Bro. Chas. Smith as Permanent Secretary. The appointment of trustees was left till next meeting, as also that of surgeon to the Lodge The next meeting will take place at Kaikora on Saturday week next. Before the meeting concluded votes of thanks were accorded to the Grand Master and to the Acting Secretary. The members were profuse in their praises of the latter officer, for the prompt manner in which he had put the business connected with the formation of the new lodge through. The following Lodges were represented :—Porangahau, Hastings, Waipukurau, Hampden and Waipawa. This concluded the ceremony, und Kaikora North Lodge is now an established fact. Four new members are to be initiated on Saturday week, and it is expected that the Lodge will rapidly grow in numbers and in financial prosperity. We sincerely hope that it will.
