WOODVILLE.

[by telegraph.] [from our own correspondent.] Monday. We have had Mr Smith here for a short stay, he having come in by the Saturday afternoon’s coach. He remained till this morning, leaving by the Masterton coach at five o’clock. During Saturday evening he went with Mr Hall to inspect soma of the new blocks just being opened up for special settlements. On Saturday our cricket club played a match wiih Palmerston. The members had a very good day’s sport, the only drawback being that they got a terrible drubbing, the visitors beating them by ten wickets. However, thej r live in hopes of beiug able to return the compliment with compound interest some day. An old familiar face has been here again during the past few days, Mr T. F. Fountain having returned from England to enjoy r the pleasures of life in the bush again. I think I forgot to tell you that Mr Ballance, when here, was interviewed by a deputation of the Woodville-Tiraumea Association rc the making of the road in it. It was eventually decided to open iup the block by means of a main road running its entire length, leaving the bye roads to be attended to by local bodies I understand that the settlers in the block have a strong notion of going in for a road district and board of their own, as they find out that their present headquarters are somewhere about Castle Point and think a long way too far to send their rates. The Pahiatua-Puketoi Special Settlement Association held its meeting for allotment of sections at Pahiatua on Saturday. Mr Florance, of Woodville, was I understand fortunate enough to obtain the pick of the sections. The association went in for trying what power it had with the Government by recommending it to place Mr Reece of Masterton on the Wellington Land Board vire Mr Mason whose term of service is just about to expire. I believe that the promoters of the lire brigade have had about thirty names given iu'for members, and if so they ought to bo able to pick a splendid team Mr Tanner gave live pounds to the brigade and Mr* Smith live pounds to the "drill shed, probably they will both* be asked to make ii square with both lists.
