WAIPUKURAU PUBLIC LIBRARY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of subscribers to the above library -was held on Tuesday evening last, when there was a good attendance. The Rev A. Grant occupied the chair. The miuutes of tlie last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The honorary secretary, Mr A. B. Taylor, read the balance-sheet for the past year, which, on the motion of Mr Barrie, seconded by Mr Jones, was adopted. A somewhat lengthy discussion took place regarding the falling off in the amount received from subscriptions to the library during the year. This, it appeared from the balance-sheet was considerable, and during the discussion which followed various suggestions were offered as to the best means of increasing the number of subscribers. It was stated that a supply of new books was much required to be added to those already on the shelves, and that the want of these was one of the causes of the falling off in numbers. It was also suggested that a reduction of tlie rates of subscription to the library would make the institution more popular, and subsequently a resolution was adopted by the meeting, giving effect to the latter suggestion. A suggestion was also made that a monthly courso of lectures might be instituted, with a view to augmenting the funds of the library, but it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the new committee to take such steps as should ho thought desirable.

A vote of thanks vvus accorded Mr Arrow and thcgentleinan who had assisted him in getting up the entertainment in aid of the library funds during the year. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Palmer, seconded by Mr Barrie, that the subscription to the library bo reduced to

the following rates ; viz. : —los per annum, 5s half-yearly, 2s 6d per quarter, or Is per month. An amendment pro posed by Mr A. B. Taylor, that the subscriptions be 10s per annum or Is per month being lost. A motion proposed by Mr B irrie, and seconded by Mr Jones, “That the Reading-room be opened from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., was unanimously agreed to. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs A. B. Taylor and J. K. Bogle, for their services during the year in the offices of secretary and auditor respectively. The meeting then proceeded to the election of a committee for tlie ensuing year, when the following gentlemen were elected ; viz. :—Rev A. Grant, Messrs A. Jones, J. Palmer, 11. Arrow, D. Murray, P. Barrie and A. Anderson.

Mr A. B. Taylor was re-elected honorary secretary and treasurer, and Mr J. K. Bogle, Auditor. Mr Anderson moved and Mr Jones seconded that it be an instruction to the incoming committee “That the committee meetings be held at least quarterly.— Carried.

A vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to the proprietors of the Waipawa Mail, IlaioJce's Bay Herald, Daily Telegraph , Evening News, Woodville Examiner , Yeoman and Manawatu Standard for tlieir kindness in supplying their papers to the Reading-room gratuitously.
