HAMPDEN

A MEETING of the district School Committee was held on Thursday evening, lor general business. The teacher’s report when read wjis adopted. It showed the school to he in a very forward condition, considering the extremely had weather we have been experiencing. The annual examination takes place on the ‘2lst proximo. I trust the youngsters will give a good account of themselves. Accornls to the amount of £26 0s 9d were passed for payment. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. I am glad to notice that the overseer to the County is recommending certain works to be performed on our roads ; not before they are wanted.

A meeting of those interested in forming a Lodge of Oddfellows was also held on Thursday evening. About 19 or 20 persons were present ; no doubt many more would have attended were it not for the inclement weather. Some of the members of the Abbotsford Lodge were expected to give the promoters all the assistance they could ; but unfortunately, I believe the above stated cause to be the reason for their absence. Mr S. W. Hardy was voted to the chair, and kindly explained to the meeting the objects and advantages of the Order. The requisite ten members to form the Lodge were obtained to apply for the dispensation. Several others joined, including J. J. Buchanan Esq., J.P. and Mr S. W. Hardy, as honorary members. Mr Austin, an old Oddfellow, also assisted the chairman to explain to the meeting the necessity of joining one of those benefit Societies. It was unanimously decided to send for dispensation to the Loyal Abbotsford Lodge. It was also decided to name the new lodge the Loyal Ruahine Lodge. The Waipawa Lodge, I believe, meets on the 15th, so that the new lodge will soon he a fact. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. A pleasure party from somewhere in the 70-Mile Bush paid us a visit during the week, and I presume, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. On their return they took a short cut to pay a flying visit to the Tikokino saw-mills, and came to grief ; that is. the buggy sustained injuries which will require the aid of one of your local tradesmen. No hones broken.

I believe the saw mill at Tikokino is going to he shifted over to this township within a month or six weeks. We shall be getting a bit lively with increased population.
