DANEVIRKE

(FROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.) One sign of the times is visible now, which is the increased hotel accommodation that our landlords are preparing for the public. Mr Allard ice is building a second end to his hotel, which makes the whole a handsome structure, in the form of a double T, with a verandah and other ornamentations in front. The additions comprise twelve new bed-rooms, some sitting-rooms, and a billiard-room. The bar is being moved so ns to be at a distance from the private part of the hotel, and thus the comfort of visitors is studied. A spacious cellar is being made underneath the bouse, and the whole establishment is far more than oue would expect to see in a bush township. Mr Baddeley has finished the removal of his hotel from Matamau, and intends applying for a license very soon. Tliis is also a comfortable hostelry, and will no doubt receive its share of public support. I see your correspondent writes and says the Waipawa people have got the worst of the bargain in the matter of land for tho special settlement. ] believe lie is right, and am sorry for it. lam afraid the flat land from which the Waipawa people will have to choose their block, is not extensive enough for them unless they take in some of the hills. This of course they did not expect to do. However, I can say this: it is the general opinion up here that Mr Balance did not treat the Waipawa people fairly. I know it to be u fact that it was quite a surprise to the Danevirke men when they got a promise of the land from the Minister. However, the survey is now being executed, so there can be no benefit gained by crying over spilt milk. Great expectations are of course entertained of the good times that will exist when the next railway contract is let. Already you see stores and boarding-houses on the road side towards Woodville, standing in readiness to take some of tho pickings. The new paper is quite the talk, and I hear that several hundreds ot pounds have been promised already. It is thought that a large number more will be subscribed in Napier.
