Through the treachery of a guide the Egyptian ar.ny was induced to enter a rocky, wooded, and waterless defile, where, falling into an ambuscade, Hicks Pasha was unable to use his guns. He maintained his position for three days, but on the fourth, his forces, exhausted by thirst, were entirely destroyed, with the exception of 50 taken prisoners. The Governor of the Soudan was killed. All the army’s guns, munitions, and camels were captured. The rebels lost heavily during the engagement. The town of Kordofan has been lost, and the entire Soudan district is ablaze. The various garrisons in the Soudan, numbering about 4000 men, are retiring on Khartoun, where the populace are said to be disloyal. November 25. The Black Flags attacked the French gunboat Caralrime off the citadel at Handyoung, and would have captured her had not the gunboat Lynx come to the rescue. The loss of the assailants was heavy, and the French lost forty men. The French garrison afterwards embarked on the Lynx to wait reinforcements. No Chinese regulars were engaged in the affair. November 26. The Emperor of China has proclaimed Annam a vassal State, and also that the seizure by the French was illegal. He has ordered the defence of Bacninh, the position which the French are about to attack.

Despatches to hand from Madagascar state that the parleying between the Hova chiefs and Admiral Gallaber has proved abortive. Tn view of the possible failure of the negotiations which are now proceeding to bring about an amicable settlement of the Tonquin difficulty, active preparations are being made for the immediate despatcli of reinforcements to the French army in Anara. A force of 6000 troops is now held in readiness to start for the East if it should be deemed necessary to send them.
