Kaikora. —Messrs J. K. Newton and Co., of Kaikora, announce in our advertising columns that their stocktaking 6ale commences on Saturday next. Oddfellows* Anniversary. —At the regular meeting of the Abbotsford Lodge, on Saturday evening last, it was decided that the anniversary of the founding of the Lodge should take place on the second Wednesday in September, and that it should take the form of sports, a procession, and a dinner and ball. The district meeting has been arranged to take place on the morning of the same day. Sale.—The furniture and effects of Mr A. Browne, of the late firm of Alexander Browne and Co., Kaikora, will be sold by auction on Friday next, Mr Browne being about to leave Kaikora. The business of the late firm has been sold to Mr Merrylees, late of Waipukurau. Full particulars of the sale appear by advertisement in another column.

Death.—We regret having to record the lamentably sudden death of Mrs Ingleton, late wife of Mr J. Ingleton, station master at Kaikora, which happened in the latter township late on Monday evening last. The deceased lady was in apparently good health up till within a short time of her death, when she was suddenly taken with a fit of retching, dying almost immediately. Mrs Ingleton was well and favorably known in the district, as is also Mr Ingleton, and much sympathy is felt for the latter in his great and sudden bereavement. The funeral will leave Kaikora for the Napier cemetery by the first train to-morrow. The Friendly Societies Act.— On Friday evening next, a meeting of representatives of all the friendly societies in the district, convened by the Abbotsford Lodge of Oddfellows, will be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Waipawa, at seven o’clock. The meeting is called to discuss the provisions of the proposed Act of the Government dealing with friendly societies and their rules. Mr W. C. Smith, M.H.R., has forwarded two copies of the proposed Act for perusal and suggestion, and it is hoped, as the question is a very important one, that a large gathering of those interested will take place.

Educational.—A meeting of the Waipawa school committee took place o-n Monday last, at noon ; present, Messrs Bibby (chairman), Robb, Johnson, and Arrow. The meeting was called to discuss a suggestion of the Education Board, that the committee should withdraw the recommendation previously made by them to the Board that Miss E. M. Hameling be appointed assistant mistress, and should further recommend the appointment of two pupil teachers in place of a mistress. The matter was well discussed, aud it was finally resolved to urge upon the Board the recommendation previously made by the committee, that Miss Hameling be appointed mistress, the committee being of opinion that there were no pupil teachers in the school sufficiently advanced to recommend in accordance with the Board’s suggestion. Superstition once believed the touch of a king or queen would cure scrofula, hence its name of “ king’s evil.” The world is wiser now, and knows that diseases of any kind can only be cured by appropriate medicinal remedies. In the case of scrofula, scorbutic eruptions, pimples on the face or body, &c., the only efficacious means of cure is Sarsaparilla. A mixture of this herb, combined with Dandelion and Potash, and known as “ Woods’ lodised Sarsaparilla,” can only be obtained of the inventor, W. E. Woods, pharmaceutical chemist, Napier, or of his agents. The agents for Waipawa and Waipukurau are Messrs E. Harwood and F. H. Drower respectively. —[Advt.]
