THE CZARS COUSINS.
It is interesting to know that the Czar bases his claim to Constantinople through the marriage of Ivan 111. with Zoe Paleologus, a member of the Greek Imperial family of that name. It may not be so well known that a decendant of Thomas, second brother of the last Emperor Constantine (who died bravely in the breach when the Turks finally stormed the city), lived for many* years in England, and is buried in the parish church of Landulph, in Cornwall, on the banks of “ Tamar’s glittering wave.” Indeed, there is every reason to believe that representatives of the Imperial Paleologus family are at the present day resident in Cornwall, though they may be in the humble position of tin miners or “ bargees.” Mr J. T. Townson, in a paper read before the Lancashire and Cheshire Historic Society, in 1857, gives an interesting account of a visit paid to the tomb of Theodoro Paleologus in Landulph Church. The inscription is as follows (modernised) : —“ Here lyeth the body of Theodoro Paleologus, of Pesaro, in Italy, descended from the Imperial line of the last Christian Emperors of Greece, being the son of Camilio, the son of Prosper, the son of Theodoro, the son of John, the son of Thomas, second brother to Constantine Paleologus, the eighth of that name, and last of the line that reigned in Constantinople until subdued by the Turks ; who married with Mary, the daughter of William Bales, of Hadley, five fejr ’ KBgHKSBi HI ■ ■-: ’ . departed 2!fi • i ■ Weekly man party. ■ opening right. 1 * i g • - H — u You ■ BBiIIIBBBMBMBiBMi • • •
