HAWKE’S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

Monday, December 15. The Board met at II a.m. Present—The Chairman (Mr J. D. Ormond), the Rev. D. Sidey, Captain Russell, and Messrs Tanner, Harding, Lee, and Sutton. A ballot was taken for three members to retire from the Board, with the result that Captain Russell, Mr Locke, and Mr Ormond became the retiring members. The following letters were read :

From the Tamumu school committee, asking whether the teacher of that school was entitled to receive the bonus given to teachers succeeding in passing 75 per cent, of children at the annual examination.

The secretary was directed to reply that the teacher of the Tamumu school was not entitled to the bonus. From the Danevirk school committee, recommending the appointment of a sewing mistress to that school.—A pproved. From the Norsewood school committee, stating that at the request of the teacher, an assistant had been employed for the current quarter, and asking the Board to grant a small sum in payment of the assistant’s services.

The Board decided that a grant could not be made as requested. From the Education Department, notifying that a grant, amounting to £687 12s lid, had been passed for payment to the Hawke’s Bay Board.

From the Danevirk school committee, requesting the Board to sanction certain additions to the contract for the schoolhouse and teacher’s residence —Agreed to, with the exception of the erection of an oven in the teacher’s residence.

The report of the architect on works completed and in course of erection was read.

On the motion of Mr Harding, it was resolved that in all future specifications for school buildings, the words “ or heart of totara” be inserted after the word “ kauri,” and in districts where neither heart of totara or kauri are obtained, that “ local timber” be specified. On the motion of Captain Russell, it was resolved that the architect be requested to inform the Board whether in those cases where local timber* have been substituted for kauri, any deduction has been made from the amount paid to the contractor.
