CORRESPONDENCE.
(to tub kditob or thk waifawa mail.) Sib, —I have been attacked on various occasions by correspondents from Makaretu in connection with road making in that district. Hither to I considered their insidious aud poisoned shafts below my notice, and consequently treated the matter with deserved contempt. But when these shafts arc aimed with a studied air of injured innocence, and implying unworthy insinuations touching my character, I feel it to be my duty iu self-defence to reply to the charges made against me. The ignorance of my caluminators forces me into explanations which would be wholly unnecessary to settle tho scruples of people not swayed by interested parties, and personal considerations. In consideration of the surroundings of the case, I must tell my fellow settlers at Makaretu that I am merely authorised to carry out the work as directed by the County Engineer. If I may bo allowed to make use of parallel cases, in order to show the unreasonableness of saddling me with the direction, extent, Ac., of roads, I beg to inform your Makaretu correspondents that I am no more responsible for the things which they have charged me with than a “ ganger” on the railway line is for any mistakes which may be made in surveying the same. The difficulties in connection with the question may fairly be attributed to the inefficiency of the survey, which (no matter from what motives) adhered too closely to the boundary lines, thereby taking the roads over insurmountable obstacles. As regards the utility and stability of tho works carried on this year under my supervision, in comparison with those of the past, I leave to the sense of those oonversant with and interested in the matter. I have no doubt but the majority of my fellow settlers will decide in my favour. I C. RAJILOSE,
