ELECTION CONTEST IN WAIKATO

There will definitely be a Labour candidate in the field at the forthcoming general election, to oppose the sitting Nationalist member, Mr G. F. Sim, according to a statement made by an offic ial of the Labour Party in Cambridge at the week-end. It is not known when the candidate will be announced, but it is understood that it will be probably in June. The person selected by the Electorate committee has to be endorsed by party headquarters in Wellington.

Mr Sim was endorsed as the National Party candidate at a meeting of delegates from all branches held in Cam-

bridge on May 3. He has had two terms in Parliament, one as member for Rotorua and the other as member for Waikato.

At the last general election in 1946, a record total of 13,146 votes was cast n the Waikato Electorate Of these Mr G. F. Sim (National) received 8724 and Mr J. Dwyer (Labour) 4339.
