Hockey Teams Show Promise Though Beaten

The Cambridge Hockey Club fielded three teams in the Hamilton competition on Saturday and although all teams were beaten in their first matches of the season they have reason to be satisfied with their efforts. The Ladies’ Team played Techinieal A and were defeated 3 goals tol. In the first half the team played well and held the opposition to a score of one all but the greater experience of the Technical team began to count in the second half and they were able to score two more goals, one of them from a penalty corner.

Play was fast and moved up and down the field, throughout the game. The forwards led by Diana Gray, Elva Christie and Beverley Batchelor showed dash, but a tendency to hit the ball too far fol'ward, allowed the opposing fullbacks to check their movements. The Cambridge fullback also, while having the ability to clear with strong hits when pressed, need to direct their hits more towards the wings who should make ground and pass out. to the centre before being tackled by the oposing backs. The Men’s Junor Team lost to Kaipaki by 5 goals to nil. This was their first time out and much work .will have to be done to improve the combination and general team work. However considering their lack of experience they showed there was good material available in the team.

The Senior team lost to Aotea 2 —l, after a fast and exciting game. Play moved up and down the field at a good pace hut due to the absence of some of their more experienced players the team lacked thrust and the ability to finish off their movements.

The outstanding player of the day was D. Dillon who repeatedly stopped what seemed certain goals. He was ably assisted by Don and Les. McKinnon. In fact it is to their credit that the scoring was held to so low a figure. The forwards besides being wihout the services of R. Speedy were unfortunate to lose Leversedge early in the game with an in jury. With the return of regular players next week play should be of a high order and worth watching. The Ladies Team for Saturday to play Tainui at Victoria Square at 12.45 p.m. is:—J. Halliday, B. May, J. Garrard, 11. McKinnon, D. McDonnald, B. McKinnon, G. Garrard, B. Batchelor, D. Gray, E. Christie, J. Hjorth. Res. K. Reynolds.
