SQUARE FOR CRICKET

REQUEST FROM P. AND T. WELFARE COMMITTEE. CONTROL OF NEW/WICKET. The Cambridge Cricket Club was granted the, use of Victoria Square for play this season as in the past at the September meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday evening. A request was received also from the Post and Telegraph Welfare Committee for the use of the Square for cricket matches on Sunday afternoons. It was stated that about five matches would be played during the season. A similar letter had' been sent to the Cambridge Cricket Club. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr * Mervyn Wells, said the Council had always dealt with the Cricket Club through the years. He suggested deferring action until the two clubs had discussed the matter.

Mr W. R. Garrard, who is president of the Cricket Club, said his club welcomed the interest in cricket by the P. and T. Welfare Committee. The main consideration was the new wicket, which could be used only in certain weather. Mr Garrard thought that the Square should be available for all sporting activities, but the Cricket Club should have control of the wicket.

"The Square is a public ground and these people are entitled to the use of it," said Mr Lewis. On his motion it-was decided that the application be referred to the Cricket Club for favourable consideration. Suggestions will then be received by the council for terms and conditions of the use of the Square.
