Spring Flowers in Great Abundance at Daffodil Show

"'MOON GOLD" THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

A beautifully formed yellow trumpet, "Moon Gold," exhibited by Edwin James, was the champion of champions award at the Cambridge Daffdil Society's annual show in the Town Hall on Friday. "Moon Gold" and the other champions held pride of place among an outstanding display of spring flowers/with narcissi predominant. / The champion trumpet wag of •course, "Moon Gold," and' the/nconvparabilis "Jean Hood," gr/wn by Mr Edwin James, Mr F. gfolson, of Putaruru, gained the leedsif championship with "White Housfe," and the barrii champions Hip Wh "St. Juob." The Daffodil Clip, decided on-points, was evenly Mr F. Colson and Mr Edwin James, each gaining 24 points. With the greater number of firsts, Mr Colson received the cup. , The display of other spring powers was one of the best seen in Cambridge, both in regard to quality and quantity. That the judges were given no easy task is indicated by the fact that there were 23 entries of Iceland poppies and 16 of anemones to instance but two of the classes. The decorative classes came in for much favourable comment by the large attendance at both, the afternoon and evening sessions. Here competition was keen also, the largest class behjig 18 entries for the centrepiece of flowers. The show was opened officially by the president, the -Reverend Colin MacKenzie, who thanked everyone who had assisted to make the show a success. He paid a tribute to. the judges, who had been given no easy task with so many beautiful flowers from which to choose. The Reverend Mr MacKenzie congratulated the winners, making special mention to those -who had received championship awards. .".'. S "."'-'' 4'.'

The "Orongo" Shield for the Women's Institute whose members gained the most points, was'presented to Fencourt by the donor, Mrs E. S. Murray. It was announced also that Mrs Murray had donated £2/-2/- to accompany, the shield. Fencourt's win with 67 points, was for the second successive year. Other points scored were:-. Karapiro 36, Maungatautari 28, Roto-o-rangi 28. Mr MacKenzie also thanked the Lyceum Club for staging a display of flowers, and the secretary of the society, Mr R. Simpson and other menif bers -of the committee for their untiring efforts. . Referring to the blooms in the narcissi section, the judge, Mr Frank Penn said the all round quality was good, and the entries were very even. He would not say the daffodils were the best he had seen this sev.son, because he had been to so many outstanding shows. He stressed . that form and quality had been the decid- ' ing factors in making his awards. Mr Penh made special reference to I the novice-section, stating that he considered the Standard was higher there in proportion, than in the other section. The : large entries among the 'novices was a very good sign for the future, he added.

The show was conducted under the auspices of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, and a number of stalls were conducted by the members of the women's organisations. The Orphans' Orchestra provided a musical entertainment' at night. Results were:— Narcissi Judge: Mr Frank Penn (Auckland) Twelve varieties: R. Simpson 1, Edwin James 2, Edgar James 3.
