MAINLY FOR WOMEN

ROTO-O-RANGI PONY CLUB CONCERT AND DANCE The concert and dance held last Saturday evening in the Roto-o-rangi Hall by the Roto-o-rangi Pony Club proved a great success, the proceeds of which will considerably augment the club funds. Visitors from Cambridge Pony Club were present, among whom were Mr P. Yearbury, convenor of all the Cambridge District Pony Clubs, and Mrs Yearbury, 'Miss L. Clark, secretary of the Cambridge Club, and Mrs Clark. The hall had been most artistically decorated for the occasion, with coloured streamers and spring flowers and foliage in yellow and gold, while articles of riding equipment and sketches of equestrian activities adorned the walls, creating the correct “horsey” atmosphere. The artist responsible for the sketches was Miss Gwen Jackson, and the other decorations were arranged by Mrs L. Duncan and Misses Colleen Wiles, Valerie Duncan, Anne Peake, Valerie Dahlberg and Messrs H. Jackson and L. Douthwaite. Mrs L. Duncan was responsible for organising the conceit programme and had taken much time in coaching the young members of the Pony Club in their recitations, songs and character parts in the play. Mrs Clark was the creator of “Roto,” the wonder horse, who figured prominently in several poems and sketches. , The following items were Presented: Pianoforte duet, Brian Robinson and Cedric Duncan; pianoforte solos, Anne Gascoigne, Anne Peake, Colleen Wiles and Brian Robinson; vocal solos, Colleen Wiles, Valerie Duncan, Cedric Duncan; vocal trio, Valerie Dahlberg, Anne Peake, Maureen Robinson; recitations, Pauline Gascoigne, Janice Wiles, Maureen Robinson, Valerie Dahlberg, Elaine Haylock, Pam Jackson; humorous monologue, Miss Gwen Jackson. One-act play, Colleen Wiles Valerie Duncan, Anne Peake, Maureen Robinson, Valerie Dahlberg, Pam Jackson, Cedric Duncan and James Campin. Conjuring and sleight-o-hand by Mr L. Wiles. “Secret Operation,” a shadow show by the “Crazy Crew,-’ Messrs Maurice Johns, Bob Peake and Peter Strong. Accompaniments to songs were played by Mrs A. L. Dahlberg. At the conclusion of the concert programme, Mr H. Jackson, instructor for the Roto-o-rangi Pony Club, thanked the audience for their splendid support for the first function held by club and also thanked all who had worked to make the evening a success. He then called upon Mr Yearbury to address the gathering. He said it was most gratifying to see the response by the public for a

new venture, the Cambridge district pony clubs now being firmly established. He congratulated the Roto-o-rangi branch on being the first to hold a function to raise funds for their club and wished them every success for the future. The following ladies were presented with shoulder sprays: Mesdames F. H. Bird (secretary R.P.C.) J. W. Peake, W. Robinson, H. Campin, A. R. Gascoigne, P. Yearbury, Clarke, H. Jackson and A. Dahlberg. Bouquets were sent to Mrs S. Wiles and Mrs V. Wooldridge, committee who were unable to be present. Refreshments were provided and served by the Pony Club committee members. A dance was held, music being played by Mesdames J. Robinson and A. Dahlberg and Mr Dom Russo, pianoaccordion. Messrs P. Strong and F. Bird wer M.’sC. .' A novelty waltz was won by Maureen Robinson and Linsie Dahlberg, and the winners of a competition were Miss J. Meade and Mr G. Meade.

COMING OF AGE CELEBRATED MISS JEAN LYNDS HONOURED. Recently a very enjoyable evening was spent in the Leamington Hall, when Mrs K. Lynds entertained a .number of . friends at a party, in honour of the coming of age of her daughter, Jean. Mrs Lynds \ received the guests wearing a navy taffeta gown with floral coatee and she was assisted by the guest of honour in cream satin with shoulder spray of roses and daphne. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with a piano solo by Miss Iris Stites. A dainty supper was served, at which the toast of the “guest of honour” was proposed by Mr R. Reid, of Matamata to which Jean suitably replied. Mr Harold Lynds then announced the engagement of his sister to Mr Winton Mackintosh, of Gisborne. ( Among those present were: Mesdames C. Reid, H. C.
